Can You be Too Positive?

positivity

One piece of advice that is given about the power of positive thinking is “Look on the bright side.” There is no denying that bad things will happen to you. Your life experiences are not always in your control.

What is under your control is your reaction to the situation or event. The simple five word saying above is telling you to choose positive thinking over becoming swamped in negative emotions when life doesn’t go your way.

That can be good advice but taken to an extreme, it can also be dangerous.

Your self-talk and limiting beliefs are the two main things that can hold you back.

You can try to fix these by yourself or you can work with a Life Coach.

This short video talks to these points and offers you a solution.

Usually, positive thinking is a good thing. Successful people became successful and didn’t get to where they are now by thinking negative thoughts consistently. The danger from positive thinking comes when it becomes a zero-sum game.

When this happens, it is called toxic positivity. You don’t accept any painful or difficult experiences; you just think positive and keep going. You are told to keep a positive mindset no matter how tough the situation is that you are in. Following are some reasons why this toxic positivity, as opposed to empowering, rational, positive thinking can cause you to experience serious problems in your life.

You ignore reality when you have toxic positivity.

Imagine, somehow, you have fallen into a deep hole. It doesn’t matter how this happened, just that you are now in the bottom of a really deep hole.

You are in the middle of nowhere and your plan of experiencing Mother Nature has turned bad. No matter how hard and loud you scream, no one can hear you.

You sit and console yourself that you were on a nature trail when the ground gave out. Because of your toxic positivity, you believe that someone will be along soon to rescue you.

You know that there are wild animals in the area and that this is not a well-travelled trail. You chose it because of that fact. You wanted to spend some alone time in the wild. You also, unfortunately, didn’t bring any food, water or other equipment.

Despite all of this, you settle down comfortably and wait patiently for the rescue that will inevitably come for you.

In this situation, your ignorance of the dire circumstance you are in could lead to your demise. With toxic positivity, you will probably have a smile on your face as well.

Instead of toxic positivity, choose positive and realistic thinking.

If you are a positive thinker, you say that you can get out of the situation. You tell yourself that it may look difficult right now, but by using your head and keeping your wits about you, you will figure a way out.

The person with this way of thinking begins to dig, climb and do whatever he can to make the situation better. He thinks positively and realistically. He knows that he can’t just sit back and hope for the best but he has to attack the situation aggressively right away.

Embracing negative thinking is not what is being advocated. Negative thinking is a very quick path to living a life full of self-doubt, failure and resentment. This is just an alert to point out to you the dangers of toxic positivity. When negative events and emotions occur, you must embrace them, deal with them and then move on. You will not have the best outcome when you ignore reality or negative situations.

The Reason Why You Fail

self-talk

You may shake your head and disagree but the reason is: you don’t want to succeed.

You are saying of course you want to succeed and I have lost my mind. It seems to be crazy to say that you fail to achieve something because you don’t want to succeed.

Your self-talk and limiting beliefs are the two main things that can hold you back.

You can try to fix these by yourself or you can work with a Life Coach.

This short video talks to these points and offers you a solution.

It actually isn’t that crazy.

You are in the present moment, the here and now. When looked at objectively, your life is nothing more than a continuous series of present moments. You can’t change your past and you are preparing for the eventual reality you will create.

Right now, you are not concerned about what you want to achieve in the future. Your psyche understands that it can only impact the here and now.

Your psyche looks at what is going on now around you. It sees that you are breathing and existing so it is happy. Do you know what makes your psyche unhappy?

Trying to change what is happening now.

It knows that you are alive and well so why bother changing anything? This could make things bad for you. When you try to take actions that you are not used to doing, such as doing something to achieve a big goal, you get push-back from your subconscious.

Your survival instinct is stopping you from succeeding.

You can defeat this natural resistance to change.

You should be applauding yourself. Most people are happy to live their current lives. For them good enough is good enough, and they don’t want to even try to make their lives better.

You aren’t one of them. You want to kick failure out to the curb and achieve success.

You can do this because you can change your mindset through conscious self-talk.

Talk to your subconscious and tell yourself that the change you want to make is good. This trains your subconscious to lead itself to conscious actions for success.

In front of a mirror, tell yourself out loud what your big goal is. Talk about the new amazing reality. Tell it why you want to make this change. What will this positive result replace in your life?

Tell yourself all of these things in the morning and before you go to bed. Write them all down and read them over to yourself several times each day.

To beat your natural resistance to change, you need to give a detailed image to your subconscious on how these changes will improve your life.

Several times every day engage in this self-talk. You have to continuously convince your subconscious that you are making changes to create a new better life.

Mistakes That Limit Your Success

success

All the struggle stress and possible disappointment may make it seem that success is not worth the effort. Success, while not easy can be simple. The first thing you need to do us to avoid the mistakes that limit your success. By understanding and avoiding these mistakes you can reach new levels of achievement.

Take control of your success

There are many things in your life that can hold you back from being successful.

Some are external and there isn’t much you can do about those. But the ones that do the most damage are the internal ones.

Your self-talk and limiting beliefs are the two main things that can hold you back.

You can try to fix these by yourself or you can work with a Life Coach.

This short video talks to these points and offers you a solution.

These success limiting mistakes need to be avoided.

Habits that aren’t effective. There are habits that you have that can help you to achieve success and habits that can stop your success no matter what your definition of success is. Are you living in a way that daily moves you closer to success? To guarantee success, what habits do you need to have?

  • Success takes time. Little things done over a long period of time makes the difference for great success.

Goals that aren’t clear. You won’t know if you are successful if you don’t have a goal. You need a target to aim for. Successful people have goals that are reviewed on a regular basis. Unsuccessful people don’t really know what they want.

No plan. Are you living by default without a plan or direction? If so, you may struggle and be living reactively. You are constantly putting out fires or are passive. You need to put a plan in place that will move you forward.

Being busy not productive. If your thinking is flawed, you may mistake working or being active for 8 hours as being productive. You will find that, as stated by the Pareto Principle, 20% of your options will contribute to 80% of your success. People will move to the easier and more comfortable activities. These will only provide a limited return on the time you spend on them.

  • Busy is not progress. You need to choose those activities that will provide you with the greatest effect.

No consistency. Champions are extremely consistent. While you may not want to plan your day down to the minute, and live the same day over and over, but being successful requires that you be much more consistent than most people will actually demonstrate. You need to spend time every day on reaching your goals.

Not dealing with discomfort. To make progress you need new behaviours. On some levels, new behaviours are uncomfortable. You are only comfortable when you repeat your past behaviours. But this will keep your life at a standstill. To be successful you need to be able to deal with any discomfort and move yourself forward.

  • To get past discomfort, you can use various methods like breathing exercises, prayer or meditation or yoga. Just because you are uncomfortable doesn’t mean that you can’t do something.

Failure to learn from mistakes. To be successful you need to fail. The most successful people have failed the most. While it is common to want to avoid failure, this is a mistake. While it isn’t an objective to fail, to attain any success, it is expected. The first attempt is only the starting point. To make improvements, failure is necessary.

  • While failure is an undesired result, it allows you to make a better attempt when you try again. When you constantly improve you will be successful.

Concerned with things that can’t be changed. Many things in life can’t be changed or altered. This is true of things in the past. Let go and focus on those things that you can change or alter.

While success can be elusive, when you can avoid the more common mistakes it is a lot easier to find. A main part of success is avoiding mistakes. Create your goals and then build the habits that will support those goals. Success can be simple when you can deal with your discomfort and learn from any mistakes.

Finding Your Drive and Ambition When None Is Present

For success, critical components are drive and ambition. Successful people are constantly looking to improve themselves as well as their skills and their circumstances. When life is hard or things aren’t going as expected, a person needs to have a lot of drive and ambition to keep themselves working.

If you are bored and get discouraged easily by any obstacles, you may have no drive. You see little point in the struggles of life. You may even try to destroy yourself with drugs or alcohol or spend too much time watching television and never really accomplish anything of value.

Take control of your success

There are many things in your life that can hold you back from being successful.

Some are external and there isn’t much you can do about those. But the ones that do the most damage are the internal ones.

These may be examples of extreme cases of no drive and ambition, everyone loses motivation from time to time.

There are some things that you can do to regain your motivation and help to increase your drive.

Develop a growth mindset. If you have a growth mindset, you believe that with time, effort and practice you can grow. If you have a fixed mindset, you think that you are limited and can’t grow or change even with hard work and practice.

  • Reading books and articles about successful people and how they overcame the obstacles confronting them can help you to build a growth mindset.
  • Even if you make mistakes and are criticized you can still practice thinking positively about yourself.
  • Your motivation can be boosted with a growth mindset which helps you improve with time and effort and practice.

Don’t procrastinate. For many people, a major cause of low motivation or a lack of success is procrastination. You may have some tasks that you put off because you dread doing them. Procrastination is self-destructive. It stops you from seeing the opportunities to achieve your life goals.

  • You can stop procrastinating by writing down all of the tasks you want to achieve and then rank them. Start with the highest priority task. Before moving on, complete the first task. Keep doing this until all of your priority tasks for the day are completed.
  • To get yourself started if you are finding it difficult, set a timer for 20 minutes. You then start on the highest priority task.
  • When you feel motivated, you will feel a lot less stressed about accomplishing your goals.

Thinking you are motivated. It seems counterintuitive to artificially create motivation since it is a feeling. This could be through wearing clothes that boost your confidence or listening to motivational music before an important meeting.

  • Thinking that motivation is a feeling may enable you to trick yourself into behaving motivated. This can boost how you feel so that can be more productive and driven.

Think of why you are struggling. If you are lacking motivation, you may spend more time focusing on why you can’t do something instead of why you can succeed.

  • If you feel unmotivated to exercise, you could be telling yourself that after work, you have no energy, so you shouldn’t bother as you wouldn’t enjoy it anyway.
  • You believe that you shouldn’t work out as there is no point since you won’t enjoy it.
  • You should reframe the situation. Think about the reasons you should work out even though you don’t feel motivated right now. Exercise has always helped you to think and your results have always been positive. You need to push yourself to get yourself to the gym.

To be successful in life you need drive and ambition. Like most of us, you have trouble maintaining a high level of these two attributes.

You can increase your productivity and bring your dreams to life. You can do this by cultivating your growth mindset. You also can trick yourself into being motivated and avoid procrastinating. Think of the counterintuitive arguments for your poor motivation as well.

Staying Positive When Everyone Around You Is Negative

staying positive

You are surrounded by negativity. It isn’t any wonder though. Social media and reality television tell you how to think and act. You can easily get caught up in all the doom and gloom.

You feel drained and negative thoughts will fill your mind when you are immersed in negativity daily.

If you would like to listen to these types of articles, you can visit my podcasts at

podcast

These are short, usually under 5 minutes but they can enable you to listen to confidence and motivation advice and tips while driving or relaxing.

You can consciously decide to eliminate or reduce the negativity. You can take practical steps each day to immerse yourself in positivity.

When there is negativity all around you, there are some strategies that are available to keep you staying positive.

Don’t take things personally. It is very easy to get yourself wrapped up in what other people think of you or say about you. That is their opinion, nothing more. It is a reflection on them if they are hostile towards you. Don’t let it bring you down.

  • When you find that you are taking things personally, observe what you are thinking. When you observe your thoughts, you can catch yourself before you get yourself too caught up in them.

  • Look at the situation from both sides and see if you can understand the other person’s actions.

  • Is there a way to challenge your beliefs to see if they are true?

  • Don’t worry about what others think, just focus on yourself.

Don’t compare yourself. You will destroy your mood when you compare yourself. Your talents and your gifts are unique to you so it is pointless to compare yourself to others.

  • You need to embrace what makes you unique and then take advantage of those distinctive traits and features.

  • Focus on what you want to achieve and focus on the journey.

  • Everyone has different backgrounds, stories and experiences. Even if it looks like someone has it all together, they may be fighting their own personal battles.

Be with positive people. People who are negative are contagious. Their negativity will rub off on you if you stay around them long enough. Positive people are also contagious. To uplift your mood, you need to spend time with them.

  • Find people who will make you feel good and will uplift you. You should feel happy and positive when you are around them.

  • When you have things in common and similar interests, your conversations and experiences will  be more enjoyable.

  • Going to events, seeking out new hobbies and volunteering will help you to find new friends.

  • Just because people seem different from you, don’t write them off, be open-minded. Embrace people’s differences and keep an open mind.

Look after your physical and mental health. It is crucial that you take care of your physical and psychological health. It is hard to stay positive if you are not taking care of yourself. Ensure that you are eating right, getting enough sleep and exercising regularly.

  • Ask for professional help if you are struggling with mental health issues.

  • Eat a balanced diet and consult a nutritionist to get a comprehensive diet plan.

  • You should try to get around eight hours of sleep a night. At least one hour before bedtime, disconnect from your electronic screens. You are more susceptible to stress and anxiety if you are not getting enough sleep.

  • Get exercise as exercising releases mood boosting endorphins. Small amounts of exercise can make a big difference in your mental health. Try for at least 30 minutes of daily exercise. Walking, swimming, cycling or any activity that you enjoy is good.

What is your passion? It is much easier to stay positive when you are passionate about something. Pour yourself into something that you are passionate about.

  • You are more likely to remain engaged and see the world in a positive light when you are passionate about something.

  • You will have a sense of purpose which is linked to feelings of happiness and well-being. When you immerse yourself in your passion, you have more purpose.

  • Your resilience increases when you are passionate about something. It is a lot easier to bounce back when you suffer a setback. This gives you a powerful reason to keep going even when things are rough.

Practice gratitude for what you have. The good things in your life are easy to take for granted. When you take time to think about your blessings, it is hard to stay negative. Reflect on the good things each day, no matter their size.

  • Life is appreciated more

  • You will be a lot more happier as gratitude and happiness go hand in hand. Grateful people are 25% more content than people who don’t practice gratitude.

  • You are more resilient when you practice gratitude. It is a lot easier to bounce back from difficult times when you are grateful for all the good things in your life.

Don’t despair if you are surrounded by negativity. There are lots of things that you can do to keep yourself positive. Take things slowly and be grateful for all the good things in your life. Seek out positive people to be around. Keep an open mind when you follow these tips, with just a little effort on your part, you will feel better in no time.
