Are You Living In The Past? Stop and Start Making Your Future Brighter

moving on

Have you ever been told to stop living in the past? People will often say this in an attempt to provide encouraging advice about moving on with your life. It sounds easy, but is it?

Although it sounds easy enough, it can be very difficult, especially if there are deep-seated reasons behind living in the past. Significant past experiences and memories, such as the death of a loved one, a painful breakup, traumatic childhood, etc., can be contributing factors as to why you can’t simply and easily move on with life.

Confidence in your abilities to go after your goals can sometimes be difficult to find or keep.

It can sometimes take time to discover the confidence you have inside you. This can be especially true if you are trying something new.

I have a program that can help you to discover what is holding you back from achieving your goals as well as help you set an attainable goal related to where you are in your life and where you are trying to be.

This program also works with you to build up your confidence in being able to reach your goal.

Possibly though, you may be holding on to things that are no longer relevant.

If you can’t let go of the past, you won’t be able to fully appreciate the beauty of the present. The hardest part of any change is making the decision and starting.

The first step is some quiet and healthy self-reflection.

Pause for a while and contemplate on your current life and its associated feelings, compared to what they could be. Without your active effort, things may improve, terribly slowly. You can take action and make space for a new happier life.

Here’s how to move forward.

Ways to Effectively Let Go of The Past

Focus on the present – focus, focus, focus.

Stop reliving the past and move on. No matter what you do, you can’t undo or remake the past, no matter how much you wish. Rather, what you can do is to make the present day the best. Live as if it’s your last. You will have less time to think about the past if you actively focus on the present.

If you are too fixated on previous negative happenings, there will be no room for positivity. This is entirely a choice you can and have to make – whether to continue hurting yourself or to embrace the new day, potentially full of joy.

Decide to let it all go, and do this with conviction.

To make it work, commit yourself to “move on” and “let it go.” If you don’t, things will continue to go in circles and could end you up getting stuck in the past, again. Make a decision that will empower you and your future, commit to it, and act.

Make room for forgiveness.

It may be hard to forget what has happened in the past and the bad behaviors of the people involved in it. Getting past resentment and forgiving others is a vital step. More to the point, you need the healing that forgiving another brings.

Forgiving doesn’t necessarily mean you agree with what they did. You can recognize that they did wrong, or badly, yet still forgive them anyway. It’s definitely not a sign of weakness if you do so. It’s confirmation that you want to move on with life and welcome any joy the present moment brings.

Physically distance yourself.

Don’t remain attached to an environment (including people) that keeps you trapped in your current circumstances and mindset. It is emotionally healthy to distance yourself from a situation or individual that is causing you to be depressed. Psychological or physical distance can help with the “letting go” process by virtue of not being constantly reminded of anything that hinders your progress.

Acceptance is the key.

Accepting your past experiences and the people that have been part of it will help you in moving on. You must remember that none of these need to define who you are. Practice the art of acceptance, remake yourself, and set yourself free.

Be accountable for your own happiness.

Your feelings are yours alone; you can’t blame someone for them. If you do, you’re allowing someone to completely take over you, at least emotionally. You will feel a huge sense of happiness and empowerment once you take responsibility for your feelings and emotions. Your attitude plays a bigger role in this than any external elements.

Evaluate your emotions.

When assessing your emotions, you need to know what are they bringing to you. Reminisce if there are happy, positive thoughts there. But if dredging the past causes negativity that will adversely affect your here and now, don’t dwell on it. Replace it with a better thought.

Make some contributions.

Going the extra mile to help others can make you feel warm and happy on the inside. It is one of the best ways to align with the real you. Brighten yours, and another’s day by offering a smile, saying a simple hello, or giving a donation to a worthwhile cause. These simple acts of kindness can help you set your perspective on a brighter path and can have a lasting impact on others and yourself.

Hopefully this can help you with your “moving on” phase. Any effort you make will all be worth it. You can do it – cheers to a brighter present and future.

Are Your Fears Holding You Back?

fears

Fear is an emotion that can hold you back from reaching your goals and levels of success in your career – or even in school. Taking risks is part of everyday life but can be hindered if you are fearful of the unknown. How often do you say no to something just because you are fearful of what you think could happen?

Confidence in your abilities to go after your goals can sometimes be difficult to find or keep.

It can sometimes take time to discover the confidence you have inside you. This can be especially true if you are trying something new.

I have a program that can help you to discover what is holding you back from achieving your goals as well as help you set an attainable goal related to where you are in your life and where you are trying to be.

Five Types of Fear

The top five fears that may be holding you back could include the following:

  1. Feeling inadequate – Do you fear you are not good enough or lack the skills to pursue your dreams? You can overcome this fear by knowing and understanding your importance in a particular area of your life.
  2. The unknown – Do you have the common fear of the unknown? You can overcome this fear by having a vision for yourself and your future.
  3. FOMO – Fear of Missing Out is when you wish you were doing what others are doing because it looks better than what you’re doing. This type of fear is a distraction that can keep you from forming real relationships.
  4. Change – Fear of change can steal your joy and peace. To overcome this fear, take time to enjoy the moment you are in. Doing this can help you appreciate your life and relationships in a deeper manner.
  5. Being judged – No one wants to be judged by others and being vulnerable opens you up for the possibility of being judged. Adam Kirk Smith, Author of “The Bravest You” says “embrace your personal story” to overcome this fear.

Fear can be crippling and can hold you back from your true potential. Though you may never live a completely fear-free life, there are ways you can overcome the fears in your life.

It’s important to be open and honest with your fears too. You could even journal those fears so you can write down the ways to overcome them. The majority of fear comes from the unknown or even the thought of taking a risk. No one wants to be judged so it comes naturally to stay away from these types of situations. Lack of self-esteem or self-confidence can be an underlying cause of such fears.

Overcome Your Fears

Begin by establishing a purpose for taking a risk; doing so this can remove that fear. Knowing your purpose will help you overcome many fears in your life. Purpose and meaning in life can help you move past your fears and guide you along your life’s journey.

Consider using positive affirmations when you are faced with a fear. Knowing where you are and what you want can help move you from a state of fear to a position of success.

Finally, understand that not all fear is negative. Some fear can save your life and help you through a life-or-death situation. According to PsychologyToday.com “Real fear can save our lives, embrace it. Manufactured fear divides us, let it go. And, be sure to give fear the attention it needs so you can distinguish between the two.”

Why Your Best Years Are Still to Come

best years

The misconception that youth is synonymous with peak life experiences is a pervasive one. As we age, it’s natural to reminisce about youthful exuberance and wonder if life’s best moments have passed.

However, this is a fallacy. Life, rich with possibility, continues to offer a multitude of opportunities regardless of age.

Before you can start to plan your success goals, there are many things that you need to understand before you can be sure that the goals you set are really the ones you want.

One of those things is to determine if there are any Limiting Beliefs that can stop you from actually achieving those goals.

I have a self-study Limiting Belief Program that you can go through to determine what your Limiting Beliefs are and how you can remove them.

You can read more and register for the program at Limiting Beliefs Program on my Confidence and Life Coaching website.

Start your journey on your path to success by identifying and removing your Limiting Beliefs so that you make the journey a lot easier.

A Lifetime of Learning

A common misconception associated with aging is the belief that there’s nothing left to learn or achieve. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The pursuit of knowledge and personal growth is a lifelong endeavour.

Perhaps you’ve attained your dream career, yet countless avenues for learning remain unexplored. Consider embarking on a new career path or delving into a new language. The spectrum of human knowledge is vast, and the opportunity to learn and grow is ever-present.

Reflect on your long-held aspirations. What skills could you refine? What dreams have you postponed due to fear of failure?  Embrace the understanding that age is no barrier to savouring life’s experiences and seizing its opportunities.

Success Has No Expiration Date

The midlife crisis, often characterized by the belief that one’s accomplishments have plateaued, is another prevalent misconception. There’s a wealth of success yet to be achieved, and age can even be a valuable asset.

The experiences accumulated over time translate into a wealth of knowledge and honed skills. You are better equipped to navigate challenges and achieve your goals. A return to university is a viable option; it’s never too late to alter your course and pursue a different path.

Finding Joy in Every Chapter

While you may fondly remember the joys of your youth, happiness is not confined by age. You hold the power to shape your perspective and cultivate enjoyment in life’s present moments.

We often overlook the power we possess to influence our own happiness. By consciously choosing a positive outlook and appreciating life’s simple pleasures, you can cultivate a sense of fulfillment that surpasses the experiences of your youth.

The notion that your best years are behind you is demonstrably false. Embrace life’s opportunities with open arms and live each day to the fullest, regardless of your age.

The Imperative of a Life Vision

vision

It is a universally acknowledged truth that to reach one’s destination, one must first be aware of the path to take. This axiom holds as much veracity today as it did upon its initial proclamation. But how does one discern their path in order to achieve their desired destination?

Before you can start to plan your success goals, there are many things that you need to understand before you can be sure that the goals you set are really the ones you want.

The Role of Goals in Vision Setting

Goals are the foundation upon which a successful life is built. They serve as the milestones that guide our progress towards the ultimate vision we hold for ourselves. A robust vision-setting process can significantly enhance the efficacy of goal-setting by providing a clear trajectory that aligns with and supports our overarching life vision.

Comprehensive Vision Across Life’s Spectrum

Have you established a vision for each facet of your life? Are you clear on your direction spiritually, socially, relationally, physically, and financially?

Employ the following process to develop a vision that is uniquely tailored to you:

Step 1: Articulate Your Vision

  • Document your vision for a specific area of your life. Craft a detailed narrative describing your aspirations. There is no incorrect approach. It is common to not capture your vision perfectly on the first attempt. Begin with an educated estimate.
    • Focus on positive outcomes. Negativity will only perpetuate unwanted circumstances. Embrace a positive mindset and concentrate on the outcomes you wish to manifest.
    • For instance, with financial aspirations: Rather than stating, “I no longer wish to experience poverty,” envision a life of abundance and detail the characteristics of such a life.
    • Although initially challenging, mastering the focus on desired outcomes becomes more intuitive over time. The benefits are profound, as your life will begin to reflect your ability to shape it deliberately.

Step 2: Engage in Visualization

  • Revisit your vision statement multiple times daily and envisage your life aligning seamlessly with your vision. Assess the emotions your vision evokes. Do you feel a surge of excitement and motivation? It should resonate with you on all levels and require no more than 60 seconds each time.

Step 3: Refine Your Vision

  • Adjust your vision as needed. If your vision does not elicit a profound sense of satisfaction, it is time for revision. Continuously refine your vision until the act of visualization feels exhilarating. Do not hesitate to rewrite any new iterations.
    • You may question the endpoint of this iterative process. The pursuit of a perfect vision is unending, as it should evolve to reflect the changes in your desires and circumstances.

Step 4: Daily Vision Affirmation

  • Consistently review your vision. Ensure that it remains compelling and indicative of the changes you wish to see. This practice will hasten the realization of your vision.

Step 5: Create Holistic Vision Statements

  • Develop individual vision statements for all life domains. Contemplate your financial status, personal relationships, adventures, health, social engagements, and spiritual well-being. Envisioning success in these areas will paint a comprehensive picture of your ideal life.

The Value of Vision Crafting

Reflect upon your daily activities. Each action you undertake either propels you towards your own vision or facilitates the achievement of another’s vision. Is it not preferable to invest in the fulfillment of your own aspirations?

Initiating a vision is the fundamental step towards manifesting the life you yearn for. Regularly refine your visions and immerse yourself in the experience they represent. This practice will become increasingly effortless, as the act of envisioning a pleasurable future is inherently enjoyable.

Do not delay in this endeavour. Begin the creation of your visions without hesitation, and immediately embark upon their enhancement. Your life will transform with remarkable speed for the better. You will find yourself dedicating your time to the realization of your personal visions rather than contributing to the fruition of another’s dream.

Strategies for Overcoming the Lure of Immediate Rewards

rewards

In an era dominated by the desire for quick outcomes and the expectation of rapid satisfaction, it is commonplace to succumb to the allure of instant gratification. This tendency, though seemingly benign, can precipitate a cascade of negative consequences, including suboptimal results and squandered time.

The contemporary landscape, enhanced by technological advancements, has conditioned us to anticipate immediate fulfillment of our wants. Such expectations, when not met, can lead to financial strain and a pervasive sense of dissatisfaction.

To extricate oneself from the grasp of instant gratification, a paradigm shift is required—one that prioritizes long-term aspirations over fleeting desires.

Outlined below are five strategies to assist in the pursuit of delayed gratification:

  1. Uncover the Underlying Impetus
  • Reflect on the Motivation for Hastiness. The compulsion to receive immediate responses, enjoy uninterrupted streaming, or access information instantaneously is prevalent. It is imperative to pause and ponder the necessity and urgency of such reactions. In most instances, the necessity is minimal.
  • Recognize the Influence of Constant Stimuli. The barrage of information we encounter can be overwhelming, prompting a natural inclination to seek simplicity.
  • Acknowledge the Gratification Derived from Speed. The swift attainment of our desires triggers a release of dopamine, engendering a growing dependency on such rapid rewards.
  1. Thoughtful Consideration of Expenditures
  • Implement a Purchase Delay. Introduce a mandatory waiting period of two weeks for purchases exceeding a certain threshold, such as $100. This practice encourages saving for enduring investments rather than ephemeral items.
  • Cultivate Gratitude for Current Possessions. Shift focus from material acquisitions to an appreciation for the abundance already present in one’s life.
  1. Establish Technology “Cool-Off” Intervals
  • Designate Specific Technology Usage Times. Place your phone outside the bedroom and commit to not engaging with it until after completing your morning routine.
  • Challenge Immediate Responses to Notifications. Impose a personal rule to wait for a brief period, such as five or ten minutes, before attending to the incessant pings of your devices.
  1. Pursue a Hobby
  • Seek Fulfillment through Creative Endeavors. Engaging in hobbies can provide a sense of achievement and purpose, mitigate stress, and serve as a conduit for creative expression.
  • Consider Diverse Interests. Activities such as gardening, drawing, calligraphy, language learning, or whittling can redirect energy and refocus attention.
  1. Establish Incremental Objectives and Recognize Achievements
  • Relish the Journey Toward Goals. Embrace the process of striving for objectives, rather than fixating solely on the outcome.
  • Celebrate Accomplishments. Acknowledge each milestone, regardless of magnitude, to bolster self-confidence and maintain motivation.
  • Emphasize Long-Term Goals. Recognizing that the journey itself is the reward can be instrumental in resisting the temptation of instant gratification.

By comprehending the root causes of the desire for instant gratification and challenging oneself to pause before reacting to the various prompts that vie for our attention daily, one can cultivate discipline. This discipline, akin to a muscle, strengthens with consistent exercise. Adhering to the aforementioned strategies can facilitate the development of self-control and the ability to delay gratification.
