While most of us shy away from things that make us uncomfortable or uncertain, successful people make it a habit to face their fears head-on.

Think about the things you might have missed out on because you let fear dictate your actions. Maybe it was a job you didn’t apply for, a conversation you didn’t initiate or a goal you never pursued because you weren’t sure you could achieve it. Fear is one of the biggest barriers to success, but overcoming it is not as insurmountable as it seems.

Successful people aren’t immune to fear. They feel the same anxieties and doubts as everyone else. The key difference is that they refuse to let those fears stop them. They’ve developed the habit of facing their fears, understanding that growth happens outside their comfort zone. They know that staying in a safe, familiar space may feel good in the short term, but it won’t lead to progress or breakthroughs.

Facing fear doesn’t mean charging into every situation without hesitation or worry. It means acknowledging the fear, but not allowing it to control your decisions. The first step is understanding that fear is often a product of our own minds. We tend to imagine the worst-case scenario, even if it’s highly unlikely. For example, you might fear public speaking because you imagine yourself forgetting your words or being laughed at. In reality, most people are far more understanding and supportive than we give them credit for. The key is recognizing that fear is usually exaggerated and not based on actual events.

One strategy successful people use to combat fear is preparation. Fear often stems from uncertainty, and one way to reduce uncertainty is by being well-prepared. If you’re afraid of speaking in front of a group, for example, practising your speech multiple times can give you the confidence you need to perform well. If you fear failing a test, dedicating time to study and review can alleviate some of that anxiety. By taking tangible steps to prepare, you reduce the unknown factors that contribute to fear.

Another important habit is reframing how you think about fear. Instead of viewing it as something negative, successful people often see fear as a sign that they’re pushing their boundaries. If you’re not at least a little bit uncomfortable, you’re probably not challenging yourself enough. Fear, in this sense, can be an indicator of growth. When you start seeing fear as a stepping stone rather than a roadblock, it becomes easier to face.

There’s also the idea of failing forward, which is something successful individuals embrace. They don’t see failure as the end of the road. Instead, they view it as a learning experience. Every failure teaches you something valuable, whether it’s a better strategy for next time or a personal insight about your strengths and weaknesses. Instead of letting fear of failure hold them back, successful people take calculated risks and accept that failure is part of the process. They understand that each setback brings them one step closer to success.

Actionable Step: The next time you feel fear creeping in, take a moment to break it down. Ask yourself, “What exactly am I afraid of?” Often, just identifying the source of the fear can make it less intimidating. Then, take one small step toward facing that fear. For example, if you’re afraid of speaking up in meetings, commit to contributing one idea in your next meeting, even if it’s brief. By taking small, manageable steps, you build your courage and reduce the power fear has over you.

Another powerful tool for facing fear is visualization. Successful people often use this technique to mentally rehearse the situation they’re afraid of. By imagining themselves succeeding, they reduce anxiety and build confidence. If you’re afraid of a big presentation, for instance, you can mentally walk yourself through the experience — imagine standing confidently in front of the audience, delivering your message clearly and receiving positive feedback. This mental rehearsal can make the real event feel more familiar and less frightening.

Fear also loses its grip when you take action. Often, the anticipation of doing something scary is worse than the act itself. Think about how much energy you’ve spent worrying about something, only to find that once you actually did it, it wasn’t nearly as bad as you imagined. The more you confront your fears, the more you realize that action is the antidote. Successful people know that taking action — even if it’s imperfect action — is better than doing nothing at all.

It’s also important to recognize that fear doesn’t just go away with success. In fact, the stakes often get higher as you achieve more. But by making a habit of facing fear, successful people build resilience. They learn to operate in spite of fear, not because they’re fearless, but because they’ve learned that the rewards of pushing through far outweigh the temporary discomfort. This resilience is what allows them to take on bigger challenges and opportunities as they come.

Fear can be paralyzing, but it doesn’t have to be. By changing how you approach fear, you can turn it from an obstacle into a tool for growth. Every time you face a fear, you get a little bit stronger. You build the courage to tackle bigger and more challenging situations. And with each victory, no matter how small, you gain momentum that propels you forward.

There’s also something liberating about not letting fear control your life. Imagine how much more you could accomplish if fear didn’t hold you back. This doesn’t mean recklessly charging into every situation without thought. It means making informed, calculated decisions and stepping into opportunities even when they make you uncomfortable. Successful people trust that they will be able to handle whatever comes their way, even if it’s difficult or scary.

Facing fear is a habit that anyone can develop. It’s not about being fearless; it’s about being courageous enough to take action in spite of fear. Successful people don’t let fear stop them from going after what they want. Instead, they use it as a signal to push forward, knowing that on the other side of fear is the success they’re working toward.

The habit of facing fear isn’t something that only applies to big, life-altering decisions. It’s a practice you can apply to everyday situations, from speaking up in a meeting to taking on a new challenge at work or school. The more you practice, the easier it becomes to recognize fear for what it is: a temporary emotion that shouldn’t dictate your decisions.

Once you start consistently facing your fears, you’ll find that many of the things you once dreaded don’t hold the same power over you. You’ll become more confident in your ability to handle whatever life throws your way, and that confidence will spill over into other areas of your life, paving the way for even greater success.

By adopting these habits, anyone can improve their chances of achieving their goals and living a more fulfilling life. But it’s important to remember that habits aren’t formed overnight. It takes consistent effort and intentionality to make these behaviours a natural part of your routine. If there’s one overarching takeaway from the habits of successful people, it’s that success is less about monumental leaps and more about steady, consistent progress.

The nine habits will be outlined in this series of articles over the next two weeks, may seem simple, but they are powerful when applied with discipline and commitment. Let’s briefly visit each one:

1. They Set Goals: Successful people don’t just dream about what they want to achieve; they create a clear plan with specific, measurable goals. By writing down their goals and breaking them into actionable steps, they set a roadmap for success. This habit provides direction and ensures that they stay focused on what truly matters.

2. They Stay Healthy: Health is the foundation of everything else. Without it, it’s hard to maintain the energy, focus and resilience needed to achieve success. Successful people prioritize their physical and mental well-being through healthy eating, regular exercise and adequate sleep, understanding that these habits enhance both their personal and professional lives.

3. They Face Fear: Fear is a natural part of the human experience, but successful people don’t let it stop them. They face fear head-on, pushing through discomfort and uncertainty to grow and seize new opportunities. Whether it’s a fear of failure, rejection or the unknown, they understand that overcoming fear is essential to reaching their full potential.

4. They Learn: Learning doesn’t stop after school. Lifelong learning keeps successful people sharp, adaptable and open to new opportunities. You don’t have to change everything overnight. Instead, start with one or two habits and commit to practising them consistently. Catch self-doubt quickly

Have you ever noticed how quickly self-doubt can spiral out of control? One moment you’re feeling fine, and the next, a small seed of doubt takes root, growing into a full-blown crisis of confidence. The more you dwell on it, the worse it becomes, feeding on your thoughts and expanding its reach. That’s why it’s crucial to catch self-doubt quickly—before it has a chance to take over.


Before you can start to plan your success goals, there are many things that you need to understand before you can be sure that the goals you set are really the ones you want.

One of those things is to determine if there are any Limiting Beliefs that can stop you from actually achieving those goals.

Self-doubt is like a small ember. Left unchecked, it can ignite and spread, consuming your confidence and leaving you feeling paralyzed. The longer you allow self-doubt to linger, the more difficult it becomes to combat. That’s why timing is everything. The sooner you recognize and address self-doubt, the easier it is to manage. If you catch it early, you can prevent it from growing into something that overwhelms you.

But how do you catch self-doubt quickly? It starts with self-awareness. Pay attention to your inner dialogue and notice when your thoughts start to turn negative. Maybe you’re about to present an idea at a meeting, and suddenly you think, “What if everyone hates it?” Or perhaps you’re preparing for an exam, and the thought pops into your head, “I’m going to fail.” These are red flags that self-doubt is creeping in.

Once you’ve identified the doubt, the next step is to challenge it immediately. Don’t let it settle in your mind; instead, confront it with positive and rational thoughts. Ask yourself if there’s any real evidence to support your doubt. Often, self-doubt is based on irrational fears rather than facts. For instance, if you doubt your ability to succeed in a task, remind yourself of similar situations where you’ve done well. By actively disputing your self-doubt, you weaken its grip on you.

Catching self-doubt quickly also means not giving it space to grow. If you let negative thoughts linger, they tend to attract more negativity. Before you know it, you’re caught in a downward spiral that’s hard to escape. Instead, try to replace negative thoughts with positive affirmations. For example, if you find yourself thinking, “I can’t do this,” counter it with, “I’ve prepared for this, and I’m capable.” This simple shift in thinking can prevent self-doubt from taking root and spreading.

Actionable Step: The next time you notice self-doubt creeping in, take immediate action to counter it. Start by identifying the specific thought that’s causing your doubt. Then, challenge that thought by asking yourself if it’s based on facts or fears. Finally, replace the doubtful thought with a positive affirmation or a reminder of past successes. For example, if you doubt your ability to perform well in an interview, recall a time when you nailed a similar situation. This approach helps you regain control over your thoughts and prevents self-doubt from snowballing into a bigger issue.

It’s also helpful to practice mindfulness to stay aware of your thoughts and emotions. Mindfulness allows you to observe your thoughts without getting caught up in them. When you notice self-doubt arising, you can acknowledge it without letting it dictate your actions. This practice can be as simple as taking a few deep breaths and refocusing your attention on the present moment, rather than letting your mind wander into a maze of doubts and fears.

Catching self-doubt quickly is a skill that gets easier with practice. The more you train yourself to recognize and address these negative thoughts early, the less power they’ll have over you. Over time, you’ll find that self-doubt becomes less frequent and less intense, allowing you to move forward with greater confidence and clarity. Remember, it’s not about eliminating self-doubt entirely—it’s about managing it effectively so it doesn’t hold you back.

Techniques to Break Through Your Limits:

  1. Decide What You Will No Longer Tolerate from Yourself

You tolerate a great deal from yourself, such as late-night snacking, procrastination, and making excuses for not maintaining a regular gym routine. When you accept poor behaviour from yourself, you will inevitably achieve poor results.

  • Action Step: Make a list of all the behaviours and attitudes you will no longer accept. To elevate yourself in any endeavour, it is crucial to eliminate the attitudes and behaviours that hinder your progress.
  1. Define Your Goals

Set bigger and better goals, and commit to them. Identify the most challenging aspects of your life and start there. The lowest-rated parts of your life often create your limits and stifle your happiness.

  • Action Step: Raise your standards. Most people set goals that are too modest. Set ambitious goals and develop a plan to achieve them quickly. With a well-thought-out plan and diligent effort, you can accomplish a great deal in a short period.
  1. Define the Five Most Important Behaviours for Your Future

Identify five daily behaviors that will transform your life. Use your goals as a guide. Examples include:

  • Cold call or email at least 10 potential clients each day.
  • Consume fewer than 2500 calories.
  • Perform 50 pushups.
  • Engage with one new person who could become a potential friend or partner.
  • Spend at least 30 minutes practising the piano.

The actions you take each day are crucial. By examining your average day, it becomes clear why your life is as it is. Determine what you can do each day to ensure that next year will be extraordinary.

  1. Find a Quality Mentor

While good mentors can be challenging to find, they are one of the best ways to surpass your current limitations.

  • Action Step: Seek a mentor who can objectively identify your weaknesses and strengths. A mentor will provide valuable insights that you may not recognize due to your ego or blind spots.
  1. Evaluate Each Day in Writing

At the end of each day, list the things you did right and those you did wrong. Commit to doing fewer of the wrong things and more of the right things moving forward.

  1. Learn

Identify three things you need to learn this year to have a successful year. Determine where you are lacking and what skills you want to develop or strengthen. Continuous learning is essential, but ensure you are learning what will have the most significant impact.

  1. Enhance Your Ability to Focus

The ability to focus is critical for achieving success. If you cannot focus, you cannot accomplish much. Consider using a timer, learning to meditate, making lists, or employing other methods to improve your focus. Focus is a skill that improves with practice.

You are capable of achieving more than you have been. While many hope for a secret trick to instant success, the reality is more challenging. It requires addressing your weaknesses and diligently working on yourself.

Raise your expectations and personal standards. Evaluate yourself daily and seek a mentor for guidance. You are your greatest adversary. Break through your self-imposed limits, and success will follow.
