Aspirations – What Are They?

Do you have a goal you want to achieve in your future? If you have hopes and dreams, you have aspirations. You have a sense of purpose and direction for living with these big picture goals. But you need to know, having goals and having aspirations are not the same thing.

Aspirations are more long-term and geared to the future, while goals are actions you need to take to get you to your destination. Look at it as looking back on your career and knowing that you were able to meet your goals, that is an aspiration. When you get a new position in six months, that is a goal. They have different, separate functions but they do work together.

Aspirations Breakdown

You will have more meaning and focus in your life when you have aspirations. There are various types of aspirations you start to look for when you start to dream about your future. People’s aspirations give them a different outlook on their lives. Some, like being a good provider are simple while others aim to be a lot higher like becoming rich and famous.

We try for two types of aspirations – intrinsic and extrinsic. They have some common themes that are indicators of s sense of purpose in our lives. The breakdown here will help you to understand which of the two types that you tend to focus on.

Intrinsic : these aspirations will satisfy your well-being. These are usually centred around relationships, your contributing to your community, health and your personal growth. An example of a social aspiration would be to make friends and build your relationships and volunteer. There are also family aspirations and skill aspirations where you develop a new skill.

Extrinsic: These types of aspirations are for achieving an instrumental outcome in your life. An extrinsic aspiration would be that you are physically attractive, wealthy or being popular. A financial aspiration when you were growing up would be to have a million dollars. If you wanted to be popular when in high school, you had popularity aspirations.

Your career aspirations can be both intrinsic and extrinsic. There are certain things that you want to accomplish like having a certain salary and image. These have parts of personal growth and community contributions mixed together.

Staying Motivated

You are losing interest in your project and you are only halfway through. You know that your motivation is going to be gone and you are helpless to stop it. You can try the following to help you stay motivated and stay on track through the rest of your project.

Visualize your success. You need to see yourself accomplishing your task to your satisfaction by the end of the project. This is important since what we tell ourselves will happen and will happen exactly as we tell ourselves. If your thoughts are about failure, you are already likely to fail. If you visualize yourself at the finish line and the project successfully finished, you are more likely to succeed. Keep the images in your head positive and just keep going.

Stop worrying. While this is easier said than done, the more you worry, the more you derail your motivation, energy and enthusiasm that you had for the project. To stop worrying, you need to take a critical look at what you are doing and ask if there are things that you could change. If there are things that can be changed, change them, if not, let them go. You don’t get caught up in worrying if you are motivated, you make it a habit of looking to the future.

Be consistent in action. Staying motivated means setting positive goals and taking consistent action. When neglected, motivation drops. You want to make sure that you keep the energy on the project going where it will do the most good. You need to make sure that you are always moving forward. You need to check your motivation daily and do what needs to be done to keep those levels high. If you are taking the weekend off from work, you should take a few minutes to think about your project. You just need to remind yourself that you are excited about going back to work on Monday. This will keep your motivation and interest high even if you are not working.

Who are you around? Check to see who you with if your motivation is still not good. You may have too many negative influences in your life. Try surrounding yourself with positive people and highly motivated people. Their positive energy will rub off on you.

Keep your environment positive. Motivation thrives in a positive environment. You can listen to motivational music, use positive affirmations, read or listen to motivational materials. These will help you to get back into your project. When you continue to feed yourself a diet of motivational material you will continue to stay motivated.

It doesn’t have to be an impossible task to stay motivated. You will stay on track if you pay attention to some details that will help you get to the finish line of your task. You will get where you want to go when you are mindful of what you are doing and having lots of positive influences.

Amazing Self-talk

Playing in your head constantly and has a dynamic impact is your self-talk. These conversations that you have determine your actions and your emotions. There are different types of self-talk and each has an advantage once you learn how to use them.

Self-talk – General

Raise awareness about your self-talk. You may not even be aware of what you are saying to yourself as self-talk is so natural. You first must become conscious of the commentary about your life that you are hearing in your mind.

Disrupt your old patterns. You can make change using self-talk. If you have a fear of numbers from a past experience, you can take a course on-line and practice when you talk to yourself while comparing prices when you go shopping.

Take action. When you are talking to yourself, include a call to action that focuses on goals that challenge you but that you can attain.

Do a reality check. What is really happening around you and how does your self-talk measure up? There is a big difference between making a small mistake and being a failure.

Talk with others. Feedback from others is valuable to obtain. What do your coworkers or your partner say about you and how does that compare to your own impression about yourself?

Consistency. Before a message is accepted, it must often be heard many times. With practice, your inner dialogue will become wiser.

Be friends with yourself. Sometimes we speak harsher to ourselves that to other people. You need to talk to yourself like you would to a friend. You have to be truthful and supportive to yourself.

Self-talk – Motivational

Build yourself up. It is in situations that require endurance and confidence where motivational self-talk works best. You can have confidence in your worth and your abilities with a good pep talk.

What are your hot buttons? Choose the words that will invigorate you. It could mean that you call yourself a superhero or just remind yourself how awesome you are.

Brevity. Short phrases and single words are the best to keep you staying on track. These will help you to better focus on your assets instead of being distracted by any nagging doubt.

Self-talk – Instructional

Get an early start. Instructional self-talk is ideal when you start a new project. Being your own coach during the beginning stages is very important.

Precision. Break your tasks down into specific steps. For public speaking, it may be to make eye contact, use a pace that is appropriate and make sure that you sound enthusiastic during your speech.

Visualize. See yourself achieving the results you want at the completion of the task.

Self-talk – Reassuring

Acknowledge your feelings. You can manage tense moments with comfort and skill when you use soothing self-talk. Accept your emotions instead of always trying to suppress them. Even if you are feeling afraid, you can act courageously.

Create some distance. To perform better under stress, it has been found that if you substitute the word “you” for “I” and call yourself by name it helps a great deal. When you are feeling the pressure, this can help to restore objectivity.

Be positive. Your challenges won’t disappear when you use self-talk but you will be able to respond more constructively. Don’t criticize a past misstep, but learn and concentrate on doing better the next time.

Channel your self-talk to get yourself moving in a positive direction. Take the thoughts that are constantly running through your head and turn them into an encouraging stream. When you do this, you will reduce your stress as well as enhance your self-confidence. This will enable you to enjoy more success in your life.

Everyone has a different idea of what success is and this means that the strategy that you choose to achieve your success will be different form someone else’s. The process that you use may also differ depending on your success definition. This could mean a successful career or a good salary.

If your version of success is only related to your professional achievements, you may leave other areas of your life to chance. These areas could be family life, sports and athletics, school and learning and your relationships.

Even though your definition of success may be different, it is likely that you will feel successful when you have feelings of fulfillment, safety, health and being loved.

But what is success? This is your ability to achieve your goals, no matter what type of goal you set.

If you are struggling to achieve the important personal things, you may also struggle to find fulfillment. When you feel that you are lacking in any of the areas mentioned, you will likely feel that you are not as successful as you want to be. This can lead to your success desire to falter.

There are methods that you can use to build a more powerful desire for success.

Develop your growth mindset. The idea that your abilities are related to your choices and effort is your growth mindset. You have specific skills but you also see that you can make improvements to those skills.

  • If you have a fixed mindset, you believe that your skills can not be improved, it is impossible to learn new skills or improve your old ones. People with a growth mindset will achieve more success than those people that have a fixed mindset.

Emotional Intelligence increase. The ability to identify, understand and to manage your own emotions is Emotional Intelligence. You are also sensitive to the feelings of other people in your life and are effective at managing relationships.

  • If you are still thinking that you are not achieving success but your EI is high, you probably have self-defeating thoughts and beliefs. They could be putting limits on your options to achieve success.
  • To achieve more success in life, you have to pay attention to your emotions. You also need to learn how to manage them.

Commit to your goals publicly. You create a sense of accountability when the public knows your plan. You will feel a commitment to follow through and it will be more difficult to give up.

  • If you want to succeed, your family, friends and colleagues must know about your goals and they also must want you to succeed.
  • If you have to give up a habit to succeed, they will need to stop you from relapsing.

Encourage yourself and keep positive. You can be your own worst enemy. We are our harshest critics and this can make you give up without even trying. Your past failures and other negative thinking can make you believe that you cannot succeed.

  • If you have experienced this, get rid of the thought and use positive affirmations to encourage you. Things like “I am capable” or whatever appeals to you. It isn’t necessary to say them daily but it does help you to stay motivated.

Focus on your known strengths. Successful people are successful, not because they are perfect but they can focus on their known strengths.

  • Many of these successful people will run their business with no knowledge of certain aspects of the company. They get help when they realize that they don’t have the necessary skills. When you use this approach, you can build a more powerful desire to achieve success.

These small, powerful steps are easy and can help you to establish a positive relationship towards success. Becoming the person you want to be can help you to find success.
