Stop Overthinking

Do you regularly go over the same thought or situations in your own mind? You are not alone if you do this. You are part of the group of people who go through periods of overthinking. While you should think things through once in a while, doing it regularly can be counterproductive. It could even be harmful to you.

You can stop this practice of overthinking.

Recognize when you are doing it. You need to identify those thoughts or the situations that are triggering this overthinking. Before you can stop it, you need to know when it is happening.

  • For some, overthinking happens in specific situations. This could be being under pressure at work or it could be when dealing with a personal issue.
  • For other people it is more general as when they are feeling stressed or anxious
  • When you can identify what is causing you to overthink, you become more aware of it occurring and can start to prevent it.

Get your thoughts onto paper. When you are overthinking, writing down your thoughts is helpful. This clears your head and you can see the situation a lot more objectively.

  • You can also identify patterns, like negative thinking or self-doubt when you write things down.
  • Using a journal may be useful for keeping track of your thoughts and the progress you make if you overthink regularly.

Before addressing an overthinking situation, relax and calm down. When you have identified your overthinking triggers, you needed to take time to relax before you attempt to address them when they occur.

  • Thinking clearly allows you to make better decisions. You can use many different methods to relax, take a break and do something you enjoy for instance.
  • You can exercise or go for a walk in nature. Taking deep breaths or listening to calming music also works well. You could try aromatherapy or relax in a warm bath. Writing in a journal can also help.

You can see things more clearly by getting another perspective. Talking to someone else can be helpful when you start overthinking. You can gain a different perspective and see things more clearly.

  • The person you choose should be someone you trust and is willing to listen without judgment. You may find it helpful to talk to a professional like a therapist or counsellor. You can reduce the frequency of your overthinking by talking about it.
  • You can start the conversation just by explaining that you are struggling with overthinking and you want to talk about it. Just be honest about your feelings and what is going on internally.
  • Ask for their opinions and you need to listen to their reply without judgment.

Focus on the present not the past or future. You can concentrate on the everyday things which can make you more aware of your thoughts and feelings.

  • This can stop you from overthinking and see that your thoughts are just thoughts.

It is possible to break your overthinking habit. You can stop overthinking quickly by recognizing the thoughts and the situations that are the triggers. By talking with someone, writing things down and using the technique of elimination. You can break the overthinking cycle.

It may be helpful to keep a journal of your thoughts and the progress you make in a journal. Give yourself time to calm down after you have identified the ideas or situations that have triggered your overthinking before you address them. You will think a lot more clearly and make better decisions.

Triggers to Your Procrastination

procrastination

According to Teddy Roosevelt, unless what you are doing involves effort, pain and difficulty, it isn’t worth doing. Do you think that way? You may respond that all of that is just “hogwash” if you have ever experienced the following.

  • The agony experienced by trying to compress a whole semester of studying into one night

  • The suffering you face when you scramble at the last minute to meet any work deadlines

  • The agony of having a large pile of dirty clothes because you continually put off doing your laundry.

We can assign these activities to procrastinators who may say this. Procrastination isn’t worthwhile yet it does involve the aspects of pain, difficulty and effort.

If procrastination is so painful, why is it done by so many people? You may have wondered this if you know a procrastinator or admit that you are a procrastinator.

Why do people procrastinate? Psychology can help look into the minds of procrastinators.

Procrastination Psychological Factors

There are various factors that can cause procrastination. While procrastinators know their behaviour, they just can’t change.

Little structure. It is a skill to be able to organize your tasks while taking your habits and your behaviours into consideration. This is a skill that procrastinators usually lack. If you can keep order of your past, present and future, you can usually manage your time well.

  • A person who cannot do this cannot plan what actions they need to dedicate time to. They can’t put in the time necessary to complete an activity.

  • They cannot focus and delay the tasks they must complete. You become a procrastinator when you build a habit of delaying tasks.

Fear and anxiety. When you can’t see the top of the clothes mountain, the task can seem challenging. When you confess this to yourself you feel uneasy.

  • You can be paralyzed by the fear of the results of your work or what is necessary to achieve your task. This results in your inability to complete a task and the result is procrastination.

No motivation. Motivation has been called by some people, the driving force behind getting what needs to be done and finished. Motivation can be either internal or external. A crucial psychological factor is internal motivation.

  • Motivation helps you decide whether you can complete a task. We all want fulfillment and pleasure in our life. If your task benefits you this way, you will want to do it.

  • You will not want to do a task if the work does not provide you with any rewards. You will lack motivation if you dislike a task. You will defer working on a task when you feel this way.

Perfectionism. Trying to hold up a heavy object isn’t easy. It is even difficult to move the object because of the pressure exerted. This strain is also what perfectionism puts on you if you suffer from it.

  • You have a high expectation of yourself if you are a perfectionist. You may not be able to complete a task to your high standards though.

  • A perfectionist won’t settle for their best. You may not want to fail in meeting your own high expectations. To make sure that you don’t fail at the task, you may postpone any work on that task

  • You may spend time thinking on how to finish the task to be able to meet your high standard. For people who procrastinate, perfectionism is a very relevant and proven psychological factor.

These are some of the whys of procrastination. You can start to overcome this self-defeating habit when you gain knowledge of the factors. You will be a lot happier when you can live a life of less effort, pain a difficulty.

The Flaws That Make You Unsuccessful

unsuccessful

Do these excuses sound familiar?

  • Tomorrow I will start my diet

  • Next week I will get my project started.

  • I can’t do this, I am not good enough

You are not alone if these are relatable. People struggle with one or more of these fatal flaws on a daily basis. You don’t have to let any of them stop you from being a success.

If you would like to listen to these types of articles, you can visit my podcasts at

podcast

These are short, usually under 5 minutes but they can enable you to listen to confidence and motivation advice and tips while driving or relaxing.

Procrastination. This is one of the more common fatal flaws. No matter your good intentions of starting something, you can always seem to find something else to do. Procrastination leads to a cycle of excuses and self-doubt.

  • Some methods you can use to reduce procrastination are to set and stick to a deadline. Write down what needs to be done and when you will do it. Break down the goal into small and manageable steps.

  • To keep you on track, find an accountability partner. Keep focused on the task at hand by eliminating distractions. Get yourself started by starting with the most straightforward task.

Perfectionism. Society celebrates perfectionism, but trying for perfectionism is just a form of self-sabotage.

  • People who are perfectionists are their own biggest critics. No matter how hard they try to do something, they are never satisfied. This leads to feelings of frustration and self-doubt.

  • To deal with perfectionism, you first need to learn how to accept imperfection. Don’t focus on the outcome, focus instead on the process. Set realistic goals and don’t be afraid of making mistakes.

  • Focus on making progress not perfection, no one is perfect. Find a role model whole accepts imperfection. You need to stop making comparisons to others and celebrate your own accomplishments no matter how small they may appear.

Fearing failure. When you start doing something new, it is natural to feel fear or anxiety. If you let fear take control, you can be prevented from taking any risks and actually achieving your goals.

  • Dealing with your fear of failure. Identify what you are afraid of and understand that part of the process is failure. Build you confidence by setting realistic goals and making a plan to achieve them.

  • Seek support from role models who have overcome failure. At some point, everyone fails. Learn from your mistakes and don’t be afraid to take any risks.

  • Start small, work your way up and be prepared to suffer some setbacks. Persevere through the difficult times you will encounter.

No motivation. When the goal or task is difficult, it is easy to lose your motivation. When this happens, it makes it harder to achieve the goals you set.

  • Staying motivated involves finding out those things that drive you. Make a plan using the SMART goals method. These are goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant  and Timely.

  • Seek support from others and work with an accountability partner. Find a role model to help you create a positive mindset. Focus on what you have attained not on your failures and persevere through the difficult times.

These four fatal flaws can stop you from becoming successful. When you identify any of these flaws in yourself, and can take the steps to overcome them, you will be well on your way to achieving your goals

Eliminate a Negative Self-image

self-image

How you perceive yourself is your self-mage. You could be thinking that you are intelligent, or lazy, bad with money, likeable or even eccentric. These self-beliefs can be either liberating or constricting.

You can be limited in your success as well have your decisions influenced by your self-image. If you believe that you are bad at talking with strangers, you may avoid many social situations. You may miss the opportunities to meet a new life-long friend or the recruiter for your dream job, or even the love of your life.

You can change your self-image and make enhancements to your life.

Identify and change your bad habits. You are not perfect, no one is. You probably have things that you do that could use a little work. Address your shortcomings., get in shape, be more patient or even just be a better friend.

  • Perfection is not possible, just focus on making progress.

List your good points. You should do this every morning and evening. Start with a long list and then add at least one item each morning and evening. Keep reminding yourself of those things that you are good at and appreciate about yourself. Review the list to keep you feeling good about yourself.

Follow your morals. You know what is right and wrong. It is hard to feel bad about yourself when you live by your own values. When you stray from these values is when you feel guilty and displeased.

  • List the behaviours that you will no longer accept
  • What are the qualities that are most important to you? Set your standards and don’t violate them.

Help others. Help a neighbour or volunteer each week. Do this without expecting anything in return. This strategy alone can improve your self-image.

  • Find an organization in your city and make a positive difference in a person’s life. You will get as much benefit from this as they do

Experience your success. You should feel good about any success you have. Make it easy to succeed by setting small goals then go out and accomplish them. This could be saving a small amount of money each month or going to the gm regularly. Prove to yourself that you can be a consistent success.

Be around people who like you. You can easily increase your self-respect by spending time with those people that already think you are great. The unkind, unsupportive and the negative people should be avoided.

Do what you enjoy. Do things on a regular basis that make you feel good. You can then carry those feelings into other areas of your life. The more positive emotions you have and the more time you spend feeling these emotions, the better you will feel.

Don’t try to be perfect. You are going to feel very unhappy in your life if the only way you can feel good about yourself if you need to be perfect. It is not possible to be perfect. You should try for things that are controllable like improvements and effort.

Be nice to yourself. When you treat yourself well, you believe that it is deserved. Treat yourself kindly as you would a good friend. Take care of your basic needs like sleeping and eating as well as having a good social life. Buy yourself those things that you need.

Having a negative self-image has repercussions in every part of your life. Do you think highly of your own life? Enhancing your self-image is time well spent. Achieving more than you think you deserve is difficult, so believe that you deserve to have a lot. You will be able to enjoy more of your life’s desires.

Develop More Conscientiousness to be More Successful

successful

Is the greatest predictor of success being intelligent or hardworking? They are great attributes to possess but you can still find people who have those qualities but are not successful. You may have a friend who is intelligent but isn’t doing well in their life.

It is also possible that you may know someone who is working at three jobs but is still having a struggle to be successful. A manual job is hard work but the people working these jobs are not usually viewed as being successful.

If you would like to listen to these types of articles, you can visit my podcasts atpodcastThese are short, usually under 5 minutes but they can enable you to listen to confidence and motivation advice and tips while driving or relaxing.

If you do want to be successful, conscientiousness is a key factor. You know what needs to be done and, when you are conscientious, your intention is doing it well. Your life could be a lot easier if you could be more conscientious.

Being conscientious is the trait that you are taking care of your business at a high level. The people that you know that are conscientious are usually successful beyond the prediction based on their intelligence and skills.

When you practice becoming more conscientious you will become more successful.

Consciousness is important. This is an important trait to have and when you understand the importance of it to your future, you will have fuel for your motivation. The first step to developing your higher level of conscientiousness is understanding.

Be punctual. Taking more responsibility for your time is s good way to start building conscientiousness. Make an agreement with yourself when you have to be somewhere at a certain time. When you are not running late, life becomes a lot easier. The people that are waiting for you will also be a lot happier with you.

Make a plan for your day and follow it. This is the core of building conscientiousness. Before you begin your day, have a plan so you will waste a lot less time and you will be able accomplish more. Just put your head down and start to follow your plan.

Finish your tasks. If you are conscientious, you will be great at finishing what you have started and avoid leaving a task unfinished. Be a finisher and push through any resistance you encounter. Don’t stop the task until it is done.

Create a plan to reach the goals you set. Having goals for the day is the best way to build your plan for the day. You can plan your day to help you achieve the goals you set. You are demonstrating conscientiousness when you are working on your long-term objectives.

Don’t react. Respond and avoid reacting when making decisions. Make thoughtful choices by taking some time and you will avoid a lot of challenges that are really unnecessary.

Get rid of distractions. Obstacles to focus come from distractions during your day. If you are becoming conscientious, you have to focus on what you are doing. Make things a lot easier on yourself by controlling your environment. Create the environment around you that is the most distraction-free.

Do your best. Do whatever you are doing the best you can. This is a big part of becoming conscientious and you will have an easier way to live.

You can develop conscientiousness even though you may not have been born conscientious. This is some good news as there are many qualities that are difficult, maybe impossible to make better such as your intelligence. Start to build your conscientiousness today. You have the power to develop it now.
