But how do you effectively use rewards to stay motivated without falling into the trap of relying on them too much?

The psychology behind rewards is rooted in a concept known as the “reward system.” This is a group of structures in the brain that is activated when we experience something pleasurable. When we anticipate a reward, our brain releases dopamine, which not only makes us feel good but also drives us to take action to achieve that reward. This is why the promise of a reward can be such a strong motivator—it taps directly into our brain’s natural reward pathways, encouraging us to stay focused and keep moving toward our goals.

One of the key benefits of using rewards is that they provide a tangible goal to work toward. This can be particularly effective when motivation starts to wane, or when the task at hand feels overwhelming. By setting up a reward system, you give yourself something to look forward to, which can make the process of working through challenges feel more manageable and even enjoyable.

But not all rewards are created equal. To use rewards effectively, it’s important to choose incentives that are meaningful and proportionate to the task. For smaller, everyday tasks, a small reward like a coffee break, a few minutes of relaxation, or a favourite snack might be enough to keep you motivated. For larger, more challenging goals, consider more significant rewards, such as a special outing, a new purchase, or even a day off.

The timing of rewards is also crucial. Immediate rewards are often more effective than delayed ones because the connection between the task and the reward is clearer. For example, if you complete a difficult assignment, treating yourself to something enjoyable right away can reinforce the positive behavior and make you more likely to repeat it in the future. However, this doesn’t mean that long-term rewards don’t have their place. For bigger goals, setting up a series of smaller rewards along the way can help maintain motivation over time, leading to a larger, more satisfying reward at the end.

It’s also worth considering how you frame your rewards. While it’s tempting to think of rewards as something external—a treat or a gift—you can also use intrinsic rewards, which are the internal satisfaction and pride that come from achieving something. For example, if you finish a project on time, the sense of accomplishment and the knowledge that you’ve done a good job can be a reward in itself. Cultivating an appreciation for these intrinsic rewards can help you stay motivated even when external rewards are less frequent.

However, it’s important to avoid becoming too dependent on rewards. If you rely solely on external incentives, you might find that your motivation falters when the rewards are no longer available or if the rewards lose their appeal. The key is to strike a balance between using rewards to boost motivation and developing the internal drive to achieve your goals regardless of external incentives.

Actionable Step: Identify a task or goal that you’ve been struggling to stay motivated about. Set up a reward system for yourself, choosing rewards that are meaningful and proportionate to the task. Make sure to include both immediate rewards for completing smaller tasks and a larger reward for achieving the overall goal. As you work toward the goal, pay attention to the intrinsic rewards you experience, such as the satisfaction of progress and the pride of accomplishment.

Using rewards effectively can make the difference between feeling stuck and finding the motivation to keep going. They provide a way to break down larger goals into manageable steps, each with its own incentive, which can help you maintain momentum and stay on track. How often have you found yourself saying, “I can’t do this because…”? These words are the telltale signs of self-doubt manifesting as excuses. While excuses might seem like rational reasons for not pursuing something, they often stem from an underlying fear of failure or a lack of confidence. The problem is that every time you make an excuse, you’re giving power to your self-doubt and reinforcing the belief that you’re not capable of achieving your goals.


Before you can start to plan your success goals, there are many things that you need to understand before you can be sure that the goals you set are really the ones you want.

One of those things is to determine if there are any Limiting Beliefs that can stop you from actually achieving those goals.

Excuses are sneaky. They often masquerade as legitimate concerns or practical limitations, but in reality, they are a defense mechanism your mind uses to protect you from the discomfort of uncertainty or potential failure. For example, you might convince yourself that you don’t have enough time to pursue a new project, when in fact, it’s the fear of not succeeding that’s holding you back. Or you might tell yourself that you’re not qualified enough for a promotion, when deep down, it’s the fear of stepping outside your comfort zone that’s really at play.

The more you allow excuses to dictate your actions, the more they become ingrained in your mindset. They start to shape your behavior, making it harder to take risks or seize opportunities. Over time, this can lead to a cycle of inaction and regret, as you continually talk yourself out of doing things that could lead to growth and success. It’s important to recognize that while excuses may feel comforting in the moment, they ultimately limit your potential and keep you stuck in a state of self-doubt.

To break free from this cycle, it’s crucial to confront your excuses head-on. Start by questioning the validity of the excuses you make. Are they truly insurmountable obstacles, or are they just convenient reasons to avoid stepping into the unknown? More often than not, you’ll find that your excuses are rooted in fear rather than reality. By challenging these excuses, you can begin to dismantle the self-doubt that fuels them and open yourself up to new possibilities.

Actionable Step: The next time you catch yourself making an excuse, pause and ask yourself, “Is this really true, or am I just afraid?” Be honest with yourself about the fears or insecurities that might be driving your excuses. Once you’ve identified the root cause, take a small step toward overcoming it. For example, if your excuse is that you don’t have enough time, try setting aside just 15 minutes a day to work on your goal. If you feel underqualified, commit to learning one new skill that could boost your confidence. The key is to take action, even if it’s just a small step, to prove to yourself that your excuses don’t have to hold you back.

It’s also helpful to reframe your mindset around excuses. Instead of viewing them as valid reasons to avoid taking action, see them as opportunities for growth. Every time you challenge an excuse, you’re strengthening your ability to push through self-doubt and take control of your life. This shift in perspective can be incredibly empowering, as it allows you to reclaim the power that excuses have over you and turn them into stepping stones toward success.

While it’s natural to want to avoid discomfort or failure, it’s important to remember that growth often happens outside your comfort zone. By letting go of excuses, you open yourself up to new experiences and opportunities that you might have otherwise missed. This doesn’t mean that every risk will lead to success, but even in failure, there are valuable lessons to be learned. The more you practice pushing past excuses, the more confident and resilient you’ll become, making it easier to tackle challenges in the future.

The Importance of Mindfulness

At the heart of staying calm during chaotic times is mindfulness. Mindfulness involves being fully aware of the present moment without judgment. It’s a simple concept but a challenging practice. By paying attention to what’s happening in the here and now, we can reduce stress and become less reactive to external pressures. Mindfulness helps us to respond rather than react. When you’re mindful, you pause, breathe, and make a conscious choice about how to proceed. This shift from reaction to response can make a significant difference.

Mindfulness practices can be as simple as deep breathing or as structured as a formal meditation session. Both methods have been proven to reduce stress and improve emotional regulation. Practising mindfulness for even just a few minutes daily can help build resilience against life’s challenges.

Cultivating Emotional Intelligence

While mindfulness centres on awareness, emotional intelligence involves managing emotions effectively. Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage our emotions while also being sensitive to the feelings of others. EI is a powerful tool for staying calm because it enables us to handle conflict and stress with grace.

One component of EI is self-regulation, which is the ability to control impulsive reactions and feelings. For example, when your child is interrupting you during a stressful workday, you may feel a surge of frustration. However, a person with high emotional intelligence can recognize this frustration, breathe through it, and choose a calmer response. This not only helps you stay grounded but also sets a good example for those around you.

Developing emotional intelligence requires practice. Journaling, engaging in reflective thinking, and seeking feedback from trusted people in your life are all effective ways to enhance emotional awareness. As you grow in EI, your ability to remain present, no matter the chaos around you, strengthens.

The Role of Boundaries in Maintaining Calm

Establishing and maintaining boundaries is essential when life becomes overwhelming. Boundaries allow us to protect our time, energy, and mental well-being. Without them, we may feel pulled in too many directions, trying to meet everyone’s needs while neglecting our own.

Setting boundaries can be as straightforward as turning off your phone during certain hours or as complicated as learning to say no to new commitments. When you create boundaries, you give yourself the space to focus on what truly matters in the moment. By not taking on every request that comes your way, you reduce stress and increase your capacity to be present with whatever task or person is in front of you.

It’s important to remember that boundaries are not walls. They are flexible and can shift based on circumstances. Communicating your needs clearly with others is a vital part of boundary-setting. Over time, establishing these boundaries will help you remain centred during life’s more hectic moments.

Grounding Techniques for Immediate Calm

When you find yourself overwhelmed, grounding techniques can offer immediate relief. These techniques are designed to help you stay connected to the present moment, pulling you away from overwhelming thoughts or emotions.

One effective grounding exercise is the 5-4-3-2-1 method, where you identify:

– 5 things you can see,
– 4 things you can touch,
– 3 things you can hear,
– 2 things you can smell,
– and 1 thing you can taste.

This sensory exercise helps redirect your attention away from chaotic thoughts and back to your immediate surroundings. Grounding techniques can be particularly useful in high-stress situations where you need to regain focus and calm quickly.

Another grounding method involves focusing on your breath. Deep, intentional breathing helps activate the body’s parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the “rest and digest” state. By practising deep breathing, you can slow your heart rate and calm your mind, allowing you to return to a state of calm.

The Power of Gratitude and Perspective

Another tool for staying present during difficult times is gratitude. When life feels overwhelming, it’s easy to focus on the problems at hand and forget about the positive aspects of our lives. Cultivating gratitude, even in small ways, can shift your mindset and bring you back to the present moment.

Gratitude can be as simple as taking a moment to reflect on one or two things you’re thankful for. By focusing on what’s going well, you can balance out the stress of chaotic moments. This practice doesn’t negate the challenges you face, but it offers a healthier perspective on handling them.

Changing your perspective can also help you stay calm. For instance, instead of seeing interruptions as stress-inducing, try to view them as opportunities for growth. If your child is vying for attention during a busy moment, consider it a chance to practice patience and presence. By reframing situations, you can reduce frustration and maintain a sense of calm.

Practising Self-Compassion

Finally, practising self-compassion is essential for staying calm in challenging times. Self-compassion involves treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer a friend. When life gets chaotic, it’s easy to criticize ourselves for not handling things better. However, being hard on yourself only adds to the stress.

Instead, approach yourself with gentleness. Acknowledge that you’re doing your best under the circumstances. This attitude not only fosters calm but also helps you recover more quickly when things go wrong.

By being compassionate towards yourself, you create the emotional space to stay present and calm. Life’s challenges become less overwhelming when you approach them from a place of self-care rather than self-criticism.

Staying calm and present in the midst of life’s chaos is a skill that anyone can develop. Most of the time, the worst outcomes we imagine exist only in our minds. Fear can magnify the risks while downplaying the benefits, making failure appear larger than life. In reality, failure is rarely as catastrophic as we make it out to be.

This fear often stems from early experiences, societal expectations, or even self-imposed standards. For instance, we might internalize the idea that failure is a reflection of our worth, something that can affect our social standing or how we are perceived by others. Yet, in truth, failure is simply part of the learning process.

The Impact of Fear on Life Choices

Fear can dictate our lives in subtle ways. It can make us hesitate to take risks, stifle our creativity, or lead to missed opportunities. By trying to avoid failure, we might stick to the familiar and comfortable, choosing paths that seem safe but ultimately limit our growth.

Negativity is pervasive, and it can be surprisingly easy to internalize. Whether it’s a critical comment, a pessimistic news story, or a social media post that makes you feel inadequate, these negative inputs can quickly accumulate, leaving you feeling drained and doubtful.
