Your Inner Critic Needs to be Silenced

self-talk

You have an inner critic that seems to be focused on making you miserable. Your life can be much simpler and more enjoyable if you can silence your inner critic. If you really listen to this critic you will be amazed that it can be so negative.

You listen to your critic as if he was an expert. This could not be further from the truth.

Look at your inner dialogue differently

Be dispassionate when listening to your inner critic. Listen for a minute and notice all of the things that you hear. Before too long you will realize that your inner voice is not really sane. Imagine you are sitting next to someone who lets their inner voice out and rambles on about unrelated things.

  • You would probably be looking for an exit if you were sitting next to this person. We speak to ourselves this way. You need to realize that you are listening to a type of person that you would probably avoid in real life. You listen to this self-talk a lot even though you shouldn’t take it seriously.

These are short, usually under 5 minutes but they can enable you to listen to confidence and motivation advice and tips while driving or relaxing.

What would you tell a friend? If one of your friends were in a similar situation as you are, what would you say? You would probably say things that are a lot different than what you are saying to yourself.

  • When you are listening to your inner critical dialogue, ignore all of the criticism and focus on being gentle as if you would be to a friend.

Think about past successes. It is believed that to overcome one negative experience you need ten positive experiences. Take time each day to remember everything amazing that you have accomplished.

  • It can become a habit when you do this regularly. When a negative thought arises, you can immediately change it to something positive.

Write down your inner self-talk. Don’t just listen to your inner critic, write down what was said. When you read it aloud, it will seem less credible.

Test the criticism. Does this negative self-talk have any supporting evidence? Are there any past times when this statement proved false?

  • How would this situation appear if you were more positive? What are the gains you could have from the current situation?

Think about today. Today the past has no value and tomorrow is not predictable. Make the most of today and don’t worry about tomorrow, it will take care of itself.

Show gratitude. Being grateful is the easiest way to uplift your mood and make your self-talk more positive. You should make a list of all the things that you are grateful for.

You get very little from your inner critic. You would never be a good friend to someone who spoke the same silly talk that your self-talk was about. If they were your friend, you would never take them seriously and probably stay far away from them.

Using these tips will help you to keep your inner critic under control. You will begin to develop the habit of talking positively to yourself which will help your self-confidence and success to rise to new levels.

Creating Your Ideal Self

ideal life

What would it take for you to start living your ideal life? It doesn’t have to difficult to achieve.

Here are some steps you can follow and start living your dream lifestyle.

Where do you want to go?

What do you see as your ideal life? What goals do you have? You need to know where you are going so you can define your ideal life. When you know what you want, you will be able to create your ideal life.

Define the person who can quickly reach your goals.

When you know what type of life you want, you need to start thinking about the type of person who can make this life happen.

  • What do you need to do to go from your present state to where you want to be quickly?
  • What would this person be like?

If you would like to listen to these types of articles, you can visit my podcasts at

podcastThese are short, usually under 5 minutes but they can enable you to listen to confidence and motivation advice and tips while driving or relaxing.

What are the habits of your ideal self?

You need to consider many different things and areas. Here are some suggestions.

  • How often does this person brush their teeth? Does he floss after every brushing? When does he floss?
  • When does he go to bed and when does he get up? Does he read when in bed? What types of material does he read? Does he read regularly at other times during the day?
  • Describe his morning routine.
  • Does he work out and for how long and how often? What is his workout routine? What is his weight and what does he eat?
  • Does he journal daily?
  • When waiting in traffic, what does he think about?

What are the traits of your ideal self?

There is more to a person than just their habits. Here are some traits you should consider.

  • What does your ideal self wear, drive, their hairstyle?
  • What attitudes does he hold towards dating? Would he easily approach an attractive stranger? Would he only date one person or many at a time?
  • Is he calculating, bold or cautious?
  • Is he a giving, selfish or practical person?
  • What about spiritual or religious feelings?
  • What values and beliefs does he hold?
  • Does he have specific skills?

You can ask about anything at all. Think that you are creating a movie character.

Use the SWISH technique

This NLP technique is powerful for encouraging you to start behaving like your ideal self.

  • Create a clear visual of your ideal self. Include all of the habits, characteristics and the qualities the ideal should have. There should be no background for this image, only a blank screen with your ideal self image standing in front of the screen looking out at you.

When you are not behaving like your ideal self, quickly bring up the ideal self image and start to immediately behave as the image would.

Start

From the characteristics and habits that you have listed, pick a couple of the easier ones and start to include them into your life. After they have been incorporated, pick a couple more from the list and repeat until the list has been exhausted.

Find Supporting Evidence

Draw attention to yourself and your actions when you are behaving like your ideal person.

Journal

A journal helps you to keep track of how you are progressing. You also get into the habit of focusing on those parts of your life that are important. You will stay motivated when you are aware of how far you have progressed.

Get started today in becoming your ideal self as you will experience joy and greater life satisfaction.

4 Thoughts People with High Self-Worth Have

self-worth

The most confident and happy people we know are the ones who have high self-worth. But how did they get that way? Are some people just born with a better sense of value? Or do they make a practice of acting a certain way, which helps to keep them feeling positive about who they are?

When you talk to people with high self-worth, you find that they have a lot of things in common. Those who feel good about themselves tend to think a certain way. Let’s look at a few of the ideas which keep people feeling worthy even when life might be difficult.

They Understand Where Mistakes Fit

Everyone messes up now and again. The person with self-worth recognizes this. They take responsibility for the action and understand that just because something went wrong, it doesn’t change who they are as a person. They still value themselves even when they make a mistake.

To help me to better plan this blog and other material, I invite you to take a quick 1-question survey by clicking on the photo below.we hear you

They Don’t Get Caught up in the Trappings of Life

Who you are has a whole lot less to do with what you have than you might think. It doesn’t matter how much money is in your bank account, whether you are wearing the right clothes or if you have the “right” education. Your value has a lot more to do with who you are inside than who you are outside. You can still be worthy even if you have very little in the way of possessions or money.

They Don’t Chase Happiness

Who you are has very little to do with whatever emotion you happen to be feeling in the moment. If you are not happy, it does not mean that you are not worthy period. You’re going to feel what you’re going to feel. Individuals with high self-worth realize this and accept their emotions for what they are: a reflection of their emotional state and not of personal value.

They Take Responsibility for How They Feel

When you have strong feelings of self-worth, you do not need other people to define you. This also means you need to drop any victim mentality. They say no one can make you feel anything without your permission. This is more true than you might realize. It’s up to you to decide who you are. No one else has this right.

Of course, there are other things people with high self-worth do. They practice empathy, especially with themselves. They love their job and set goals that make sense to them. The common thread? They do things that honor them. They don’t make compromises or get caught up in doing what they think they ‘should’ but instead focus on what’s right for them.

You can do this, too, by merely paying attention to your choices and holding fast to who you are.

Live Your Life on Purpose and Get the Most out of Each Day

happy-purpose

Do you ever feel like you’re just going through the motions? One day bleeds into the next until years have passed, and you’re left wondering where the time went. Having passion and meaning in your life can break you out of your routine. You might be working hard right now, but are you excited and fulfilled?

Use these strategies to find more passion and create a life that fulfills you:

  1. Determine what’s most important to you. Is it helping others or personal achievement? Does music move your soul? Do you love to compete? What brings you the most joy and happiness? Your passion in life is hidden in there somewhere. Can you find it?

  2. Think short-term. What could you do right now that sounds exciting to you? While long-term goals can be more meaningful, it’s important to enjoy yourself in the short-term, too. Now might be the time to try skydiving or visiting New Orleans. Maybe it’s finally time to try out for the local theater.

  3. Think long-term. Pursuits that are more meaningful are likely to require more time and energy. What do you want to do over the next 10+ years? If you could accomplish one thing before the end of your life, what would it be?
    • Imagine your doctor just told you that you only have weeks left to live, what is the one thing you wish you had done?
  1. How do you like to spend your free time now? If you have a few hours or a Saturday to yourself, how do you choose to spend it? Are you building a boat in your garage or writing a post for your blog? Your ideal life might include your current hobbies on a larger scale. Think about why you enjoy the hobbies you currently spend time on.
  2. If you were retired, what would you like to do? If you had more resources and unlimited time each day, how would you choose to spend your time? Describe your perfect day.

  3. Get out of your comfort zone. Most of us are limited by our fear of failure or a fear of the unknown. However, the most meaningful activities are most likely outside of your comfort zone. Be brave – explore all your opportunities.

  4. Set a goal to find meaning in your life. If you can set a goal to lose 25 pounds, you can set a goal to create a more exciting life. Create a goal to find your life’s passion. Give yourself 30 days and spend a few minutes each morning and night on the task. Close your eyes and listen for the answer. Keep a running list and evaluate it at the end of the month.
  5. Turn off the TV. It’s hard to live a meaningful life full of passion if you’re spending time watching TV. You can find something better to do. Go do it.
  6. Do something new. If you’re stuck in a rut, the easiest way to shake up your thinking is to try a new activity. Take a salsa lesson or book a dinner cruise. New experiences help to make each day unique.

Humans have been searching for the meaning of life for millennia. While there isn’t a universal answer, it’s possible to find meaning in your own life. Avoid allowing your life to pass by without fully living it. Set a few goals and experience life outside your comfort zone. Find your passion and build your life around it.

If you set goals and find your life’s purpose you will be in the upper portion of people who know what they want and how they will achieve it. You can join the ranks of the ultra successful.

I believe in my own abilities.

ability

I am capable of so many things!

My talents and skills combine to help me do good things for myself and others, and I am proud of what I have to offer the world. Whatever comes my way, I can accomplish what I set out to do. I believe in my own abilities.

Each day of my life, I grow in some way. I put my best foot forward and learn from everything that comes to me. Because I can grow from even the most challenging situations, I know that I can rise to any occasion.

I am capable of more than I can even dream of today, and I look forward to seeing those abilities manifest.

If I ever feel like I am doing less-than-fabulous work, I give myself a breather. Sometimes a little time away is enough to give me the perspective I need to approach a task in a new light.

During this time, I think about my past successes. This helps me remember my own capability, so when I return to work, I feel good about myself.

I have accomplished so much in my life. This is due, in no small part, to my innate talents. But I have also learned many skills that help me achieve my goals. Whether working on my own objectives or being of service to others, everything I do helps me to do even better tomorrow.

Today, I am thankful for all of my skills and talents. I am confident in my ability to reach my goals. Each day, I remind myself of what I do well, which encourages me to move forward with positivity.

Self-Reflection Questions:

  1. What are three things I do very, very well?
  2. What challenges am I most proud of having overcome?
  3. How can I continue to increase my confidence in my own abilities?

You now have some advice and tips to help you to believe in your own abilities so that you can keep growing in your life.

If you still think that this is something that you will need help with, you can contact me at michael@coachmichaelw.com
