So, what can you do to make that giant leap forward? Try these strategies:

  1. Take one step back to move forward. Often, the first thing to do when you need to move forward but feel stuck is to step back. Stop. Avoid trying to force something to happen.
    • Then, you can see what needs to be done and break it down into smaller steps. The more you do, the quicker you’ll start to feel better and be in a position to take the next step.

  1. Monitor your state of mind. When life gives you lemons, it can be hard to see the positive. It’s so easy to see the negative situation and feel overwhelmed. Try to stick your head in the sand for a while.
    • Try to block out circumstances you can’t change and focus on the things you can change. Before long, you’ll have a much more positive outlook and will end up making more progress than you ever imagined possible.
  1. Identify the details of what’s going on. Sometimes we don’t realize how many pieces are involved. It’s easy to think you’re facing one problem when it’s a combination of things.
    • Be honest with yourself. Which aspects can you change, and what elements can you influence? Also, which parts could you let go?
  1. Let the past go. Just because you had a terrible experience in the past with no chance of a positive outcome doesn’t mean the past has to define you.
    • Embrace the mistake or pain as a chance to learn and grow. Who knows, the negative experience could be the catalyst for future success.
  1. Consider your options. Look beyond your current circumstances and examine all the choices and possibilities. Don’t get caught up in your present feeling and give up your power. You always have a choice about your next move.
    • When you look at all the options at your disposal, you feel hopeful, motivated, and empowered.
  1. Devise a plan and stick to it. At this point, you have all the information you need. You’ve worked to change your mindset, taken a step back, let the past go, and considered your options. Now, it’s time to take action.
    • Set some goals and realize your dreams. Get out of your way, follow your heart, and seize the moment.
  1. Remind yourself of your “why.” There’s no time like the present. Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way and most importantly, always remember your core values.
    • Remember why you started this journey and what you ultimately want. This attitude will help you stay strong and focused.
  1. Start small. Building momentum is crucial to your success. Take small steps each day and gradually build momentum toward your goals.

 

  1. Discard what no longer works, even if it worked in the past. Use past experiences as a guide, but don’t be afraid to try something new if it works better.
    • Sometimes, people fail because they’re scared to let go of the systems that brought them to their current stage. Don’t let that happen to you!
  1. Always be grateful. Your attitude has a significant impact on your life. Gratitude is the best attitude to have because it takes you away from what you don’t want and focuses you on what you do want.
    • An example of gratitude is feeling thankful to your parents for all they’ve done for you. Another is feeling thankful for your health and not being afraid to go to the doctor when you have a health issue.

Motivation is not always constant, but you can find your way back to it. All you have to do is relax, take it easy, and consider what you’re trying to accomplish.

Even when things seem impossible, there’s always a chance for you if you have the patience, determination, and enlightenment to persevere.

5 Ways to Tell You’re Headed in the Right Direction in Life

People tend to wonder if their life is headed in the right direction when things aren’t going well for them. That presupposes that people enjoy a sense of ease when life goes well for them. They don’t feel the need to question their life when things are going well.

They flow with events and don’t hesitate because things work.

A life without direction is like a ship without a rudder. If rudderless ships can go in circles, then who’s to say people won’t follow the same journey?

But whether you’re steering a little or a lot in life, some key indicators tell you without a doubt that you have the right direction.

How can you tell your life is in the right direction? Here are five signs:

  1. Things fall in place for you. When you’re going in the right direction, it seems as if the universe is sending you everything you need to get to your destination.
    • People come into your life at just the right moment, opportunities come your way, and you get accepted to programs or schools that you never thought you’d ever be able to join. Sometimes, these coincidences even look kind of magical.

  1. Things that happened in the past don’t bother you anymore. Significant life changes can make us feel like giving up on our dreams. Losing a job or breaking off a relationship can be enough to make us feel like we’ve made the worst mistakes of our lives.
    • But when you’re heading in the right direction in life, the past doesn’t bother you anymore. You feel like the mess of your life was worth it, even if it took years for you to perceive it that way.
    • Things that don’t interfere with your life don’t seem to matter to you. And old grudges create no pain at all. You easily let go.
  1. You don’t let setbacks hold you back. You bounce back quickly from failure or rejection. You keep going, even when it seems like everyone else has given up.
    • Life will have its ups and downs. The difference is, you don’t get tied down with the emotional turmoil of setbacks. Instead, you learn from them and carry on for the good times ahead!
  1. What other people say bothers you less. It bothered you when your friends would tell you that you were making a mistake. But now you don’t care what they think. You’re on your life path, and you expect to find like-minded people there.
    • When you’re on the right track, you don’t feel a strong desire to seek others’ approval. You don’t strive to receive confirmation from others to ascertain the validity of your actions.
    • You may allow feedback from others, but you’re not overly interested in their opinions and preferences. You are more invested in what you know works and what feels right to you, and you’re more confident in your choices and decisions.
    • You are likely to take more risks and adopt more unconventional approaches to pursue your dreams. You strive to be deliberate in your pursuit of success instead of simply reacting to the circumstances in your life.
  1. You tend to build things up instead of destroying them. When your life is in the right direction, you experience a more significant presence and intensity to your purpose. You dream bigger and bolder, pursuing those dreams with more enthusiasm and desperation.
    • You are more comfortable owning up to your failure and figuring out what to do next.

When people make significant changes in their lives, they often resort to nitpicking their flaws to grow at a faster pace. They scour their past and scrutinize everything they have ever done in hopes of finding something to apologize for or second-guess. But when you’re on the right track, you don’t need to second-guess yourself.

7 Ways You Can Suffer if Your Life is Out of Balance

It’s very challenging to achieve balance in life. Some believe it’s impossible to have a balanced life if you’re committed to succeeding at the highest level. Maybe that’s true, but most people don’t need to become a billionaire or a movie star to consider themselves successful.

Success and a balanced life can coexist. However, you can’t afford to waste any of your time.

A life that’s out of balance includes some degree of suffering:

  1. When your life is out of whack, you can spend too much money. If you’re working hard day after day, it’s common to think that you deserve to enjoy your life, so you whip out your wallet. Unfortunately, it’s easy to outspend your income. The pleasure you get from spending money also doesn’t last for long.
    • On the other end of the spectrum, if you’re not paying enough attention to work, your income is likely lower than it could be.
    • Putting too much or too little attention on work can have negative financial implications.
  2. If your life is out of balance, you’re likely to exercise too little, eat poorly, and suffer from excessive amounts of stress. You can also suffer from insomnia. Your health is one of the first things to go downhill when your life is out of balance.
  3. Your relationship with your friends and family can suffer. One of the other casualties of an out-of-balance lifestyle is your relationship with other people. Whether it’s your spouse, partner, children, friends, or other family members, your relationships can suffer.
    • Consider the consequences of damaging your relationship with your spouse and children. Are the other things you’re spending time on worth it?
  4. You don’t have time for the things you enjoy. Do you love to watch football? Go out with the ladies for dinner on Thursdays? Whittle totem poles in the garage? An out of balance life lacks the time necessary to enjoy your hobbies and other enjoyable activities.
  5. Your mood suffers. Are you cranky, intolerant, angry, or feeling hopeless? Your life might be out of balance. People with an out of balance life often resent the time that people and unrelated activities require.
    • It’s not easy to feel good when your life is out of whack. A consistent bad mood is a terrible burden to carry, for you and everyone around you. Everyone suffers when a family member is miserable.
  6. You lose the ability to focus. A lack of sleep, horrible diet, no exercise, and no social life can tear down your ability to focus your attention productively. As your mind and body wear down, you can’t stay on task as well.
    • You’re also spending too much brain power focused on other things. If you’re eating dinner with your family, but lost in your thoughts, you’re not focusing on sharing a meal with your family.
  7. You either won’t take or can’t enjoy a vacation. If you can’t, or won’t, make time for a vacation, your life is out of balance. This can be a great test to determine if your life is under control. Do you think your life is unbalanced? Plan a vacation and see what happens!

Simple Guide to Setting Realistic Goals for the New Year

The New Year is the perfect time to start fresh. If there’s any aspect of your life that you’d like to improve, set some clear and attainable goals for yourself that will help you get there.

Take It Slow

Work towards your goal one piece at a time. It’s important to take it slow and not take on too much at once. The main reason that some people fail when it comes to their New Year’s goals is because they fail to plan out a realistic path.

Follow Through With a Plan

It’s easy to say: “I want to lose 50 pounds” or “I want to learn a musical instrument.” Keep in mind that big goals like these will take some time and effort. Diets are hard to start because you may feel unmotivated or hungry. Musical instruments require time to master, and you may start with weeks of just learning notes before getting to any fun melodies.

Remember that the beginning is tough. Muster up the courage and enthusiasm to continue with your efforts. Remember that most people give up, but you’re not most people, are you?

You’re different because, unlike most people, you’re going to create a clear and realistic plan to take you right to success. If you’re going to lose 50 pounds, define how you’re going to lose those pounds. Are you starting an exercise routine? Are you going to join Weight Watchers or count calories?

You know that you won’t lose the weight quickly; it’s a steady loss that brings success. Even if you’re short a couple of pounds on one of your short-term goals, you can revise your plan and kick up the pace, or just continue on your path because you’ll reach your 50 pound goal before the year is out. That’s what you’ll be able to accomplish with a solid plan in place.

Be Real

You have to stay realistic when it comes to your New Year’s goals. The holidays are a joyful time, and often times you’ll feel motivated to achieve something big. Know that you can achieve big things, but there are also only 24 hours in a day.

Avoid making goals that would take more than a year to complete. If you want to make a long-term goal like this, break it up into parts and give yourself a realistic plan for your first year goal.

Visualize the Outcome

When you run into snags in the road, as you’re bound to in life from time to time, it will help to visualize yourself reaching your end goal. Visualizing it makes it feel real and motivates you to continue to work hard to make it happen.

The Right Attitude

If you’re practising the right attitude, you can go far. It’s true that all you need to do is believe in yourself. You’ve probably realized that if you don’t believe that you can accomplish something, you simply won’t. How can you expect to achieve great things if you don’t believe in yourself?

An optimistic attitude is critical to your success. Think about how you felt when you first set your New Year’s goal. Chances are that you had an excellent attitude, so try to maintain that mindset throughout your journey to success with your goal.

Once you’ve determined a realistic goal and divided it up into short, achievable tasks, you’re bound for success as long as you take action to complete each step. Go ahead and make that New Year’s resolution, knowing that this year is going to be your most successful yet!

Learn to Achieve More, Even When You’re Unmotivated

Motivation can be an issue for many of us. While motivation is great, there are many things in our lives that need to be done, regardless of whether motivation is there to propel us. Most of us need to go to work, brush our teeth, pay our bills, and more. It really doesn’t matter whether we’re motivated. These things still have to be done.

Unfortunately, the tasks listed above are usually done from a place of negative motivation. We do them because the consequence of not doing them is so uncomfortable. But it works.

However, negative motivation usually won’t work when there isn’t an immediate negative consequence. For example, it’s easy to put off exercising and to sit on the couch instead.

What’s important is to create a system that makes your challenging activities more appealing. It’s also important to make it easy to get started. Thinking too much makes it easy to talk yourself out of taking action.

Try this system to achieve more of what you want, regardless of your motivation:

  1. Accept the fact that you might not “feel” like taking action. The best athletes in the world don’t always feel like training. The most successful business people in the world don’t always feel like going to the office.
  2. Create a compelling future. Think about how much you’ll gain by taking action and moving toward your goals.
    • Think far into the future and then bring it back to the next few months. Imagine how great it will feel when you’re really making significant progress.
  1. Consider what will happen if you don’t take action. Most of us keep living the same day over and over. If you want your life to change, it will take some new actions.
    • Imagine how you’ll feel if your life is exactly the same next year.
  1. Make a list of the most important actions. What activities will create the greatest results? Frequently, these are the actions that are less than enjoyable. But if you can get yourself to do these things, nothing can stop you.
  2. Create a schedule. What are you going to do each day to make your compelling future come true? When are you going to do the activities you identified in the previous step? During what part of the day are you the most productive? Make it easy to get started.
  3. Reward yourself. When you successfully stick to your schedule, reward yourself. You could go get a massage at the end of the week or head out to your favourite restaurant. Choose something that appeals to you and makes you want to get busy.
  4. “Punish” yourself. Create some additional motivation by setting up a punishment if you come up short. Maybe you’ll have to clean all the toilets in the house. Maybe you’ll go run a mile.
  5. Re-evaluate at the end of the day. What did you do well? What could you have done better? Start over tomorrow with your analysis to guide you.

Motivation is great, but if we all waited to be inspired by motivation, little would ever get accomplished. Commitment will usually result in greater accomplishment than motivation. Learn to get started and be “self-motivating.” All anyone really needs is to get busy. Avoid waiting for inspiration. Get things done and your success can serve as inspiration.
