Believe it or not, creating a personal contract with yourself could be the game-changer you need.


Before you can start to plan your success goals, there are many things that you need to understand before you can be sure that the goals you set are really the ones you want.

The concept of writing a contract to yourself is more than just a motivational gimmick. It’s a psychological strategy that leverages commitment and accountability. When you write something down — especially in the form of a formal contract — you are making a tangible commitment to yourself. This isn’t just a casual note or a fleeting thought; it’s a serious promise that you’re less likely to break. The act of writing it down solidifies your intention, making it feel more real and binding.

There’s a psychological principle at play here called the “commitment effect.” When we commit to something, particularly in writing, we’re more likely to follow through because we don’t want to face the cognitive dissonance that comes from breaking that commitment. Cognitive dissonance is the uncomfortable feeling we get when our actions don’t align with our beliefs or commitments. By creating a contract, you’re essentially setting a psychological trap for yourself: your mind wants to avoid the discomfort of breaking a promise, so it pushes you to stay on track.

But why does this work? Part of the effectiveness of a personal contract comes from the sense of accountability it creates. While you might be able to justify breaking a verbal promise to yourself, it’s much harder to ignore a written contract. The act of writing it down makes it feel more official and harder to dismiss. Plus, if you include a penalty — like donating to charity if you fail to meet your goal — it adds an extra layer of motivation. The thought of losing something, whether it’s money or pride, can be a powerful motivator.

To get the most out of this strategy, it’s important to approach it seriously. Start by clearly defining your goal. Be specific about what you want to achieve and set a realistic deadline. For example, instead of vaguely stating, “I will get in shape,” write, “I will lose 10 pounds by November 30th by working out three times a week and eating a balanced diet.” The more specific you are, the easier it will be to measure your progress and hold yourself accountable.

Next, consider adding a consequence for not meeting your goal. This could be something like donating a certain amount of money to a cause you care about — or one you don’t care about, which might be even more motivating! The key is to make the consequence meaningful enough to motivate you but not so harsh that it becomes a source of stress.

Some people even take this a step further by sharing their contract with a friend or accountability partner. This adds an extra layer of accountability because now someone else knows about your commitment. The thought of having to explain to someone else why you didn’t meet your goal can be a powerful motivator to stay on track.

Actionable Step: Write a contract with yourself for one specific goal you want to achieve. Include a clear and measurable objective, a realistic deadline and a meaningful consequence if you don’t meet your goal. Consider sharing this contract with a trusted friend or colleague to increase your accountability.

By formalizing your goals in this way, you create a powerful tool for maintaining motivation. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of setting goals, but the real challenge lies in sticking with them over time. A personal contract serves as a constant reminder of what you’re working toward and why it matters.

When life hits you hard, your immediate reaction might be to magnify the problem. Everything seems worse in the heat of the moment—like the whole universe is conspiring against you. This is a common cognitive bias called “catastrophizing,” where your mind leaps to the worst-case scenario. While it’s normal to have these feelings, they aren’t always an accurate reflection of reality.

Taking a step back to put your situation in perspective is crucial. Imagine your problem as a single chapter in the long story of your life. While it might be a challenging chapter, it doesn’t define the entire book. In fact, this perspective shift can be incredibly empowering. When you stop seeing the situation as the end of the world and start viewing it as a temporary setback, you gain a clearer head and a calmer approach to problem-solving.

One effective way to put things in perspective is to count your blessings. Yes, it might sound cliché, but gratitude can be a powerful tool. No matter how dire your situation seems, there are always aspects of your life that are going well. Perhaps you have supportive friends or family, good health, or a roof over your head. These positive elements of your life can serve as anchors, helping you stay grounded when everything else feels uncertain.

This doesn’t mean you should ignore the seriousness of your situation or dismiss your feelings. It’s important to acknowledge what you’re going through and give yourself permission to feel upset. But by also recognizing the good in your life, you balance out those negative emotions and prevent them from taking over entirely. This balanced perspective allows you to approach your problems more rationally, without being completely overwhelmed by them.

Sometimes, it helps to remember that things could be worse. This isn’t to minimize your experience but to recognize that there are still areas of your life that remain intact. For example, if you’ve lost your job, it’s a difficult and stressful situation. But if you still have your health, your skills, and your support network, then you have resources to help you through this tough time. Realizing that not everything is falling apart can provide the strength you need to tackle what is.

Actionable Step: The next time you find yourself in a difficult situation, try to put it in perspective by listing three things that are still going well in your life. This could be anything from the people who support you to small personal victories you’ve had recently. Write them down and keep this list somewhere visible. Whenever you start feeling overwhelmed, refer back to this list to remind yourself that there is more to your life than just this one problem.

A common pitfall is getting stuck in a cycle of negativity, where all you can see are the things going wrong. This tunnel vision prevents you from seeing the broader picture and keeps you trapped in a state of despair. To overcome this, make it a habit to consciously shift your focus to what’s still working in your favour. It may feel difficult at first, especially when you’re deep in the throes of a problem, but with practice, it becomes easier.

Perspective is not about denying the difficulties you face but about recognizing that they are only one part of your experience. When you broaden your view, you can see that life is a mix of good and bad, and that both can coexist. This understanding can help reduce the emotional intensity of your situation and allow you to approach it with a clearer, more balanced mind.

As you navigate through tough times, remember that perspective is a powerful tool. It can transform a seemingly insurmountable problem into a manageable challenge. By keeping the bigger picture in mind and acknowledging the good alongside the bad, you’ll find that you’re better equipped to handle whatever comes your way. The situation might not change overnight, but your ability to deal with it will improve, making the journey a little less daunting.

Staying Calm and Present Amidst Life’s Chaos

Life throws chaos at us constantly. From juggling work deadlines to managing household responsibilities, we often find ourselves in the eye of the storm. The pressure to meet expectations—both from ourselves and others—can become overwhelming. Whether it’s your phone buzzing incessantly or your child vying for your attention while you’re focused on an important task, modern life feels busier than ever. Yet, amidst this whirlwind, staying calm and present is not only possible but also crucial for maintaining mental and emotional balance.


Confidence in your abilities to go after your goals can sometimes be difficult to find or keep.

The Importance of Mindfulness

At the heart of staying calm during chaotic times is mindfulness. Mindfulness involves being fully aware of the present moment without judgment. It’s a simple concept but a challenging practice. By paying attention to what’s happening in the here and now, we can reduce stress and become less reactive to external pressures. Mindfulness helps us to respond rather than react. When you’re mindful, you pause, breathe, and make a conscious choice about how to proceed. This shift from reaction to response can make a significant difference.

Mindfulness practices can be as simple as deep breathing or as structured as a formal meditation session. Both methods have been proven to reduce stress and improve emotional regulation. Practising mindfulness for even just a few minutes daily can help build resilience against life’s challenges.

Cultivating Emotional Intelligence

While mindfulness centres on awareness, emotional intelligence involves managing emotions effectively. Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage our emotions while also being sensitive to the feelings of others. EI is a powerful tool for staying calm because it enables us to handle conflict and stress with grace.

One component of EI is self-regulation, which is the ability to control impulsive reactions and feelings. For example, when your child is interrupting you during a stressful workday, you may feel a surge of frustration. However, a person with high emotional intelligence can recognize this frustration, breathe through it, and choose a calmer response. This not only helps you stay grounded but also sets a good example for those around you.

Developing emotional intelligence requires practice. Journaling, engaging in reflective thinking, and seeking feedback from trusted people in your life are all effective ways to enhance emotional awareness. As you grow in EI, your ability to remain present, no matter the chaos around you, strengthens.

The Role of Boundaries in Maintaining Calm

Establishing and maintaining boundaries is essential when life becomes overwhelming. Boundaries allow us to protect our time, energy, and mental well-being. Without them, we may feel pulled in too many directions, trying to meet everyone’s needs while neglecting our own.

Setting boundaries can be as straightforward as turning off your phone during certain hours or as complicated as learning to say no to new commitments. When you create boundaries, you give yourself the space to focus on what truly matters in the moment. By not taking on every request that comes your way, you reduce stress and increase your capacity to be present with whatever task or person is in front of you.

It’s important to remember that boundaries are not walls. They are flexible and can shift based on circumstances. Communicating your needs clearly with others is a vital part of boundary-setting. Over time, establishing these boundaries will help you remain centred during life’s more hectic moments.

Grounding Techniques for Immediate Calm

When you find yourself overwhelmed, grounding techniques can offer immediate relief. These techniques are designed to help you stay connected to the present moment, pulling you away from overwhelming thoughts or emotions.

One effective grounding exercise is the 5-4-3-2-1 method, where you identify:

– 5 things you can see,
– 4 things you can touch,
– 3 things you can hear,
– 2 things you can smell,
– and 1 thing you can taste.

This sensory exercise helps redirect your attention away from chaotic thoughts and back to your immediate surroundings. Grounding techniques can be particularly useful in high-stress situations where you need to regain focus and calm quickly.

Another grounding method involves focusing on your breath. Deep, intentional breathing helps activate the body’s parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the “rest and digest” state. By practising deep breathing, you can slow your heart rate and calm your mind, allowing you to return to a state of calm.

The Power of Gratitude and Perspective

Another tool for staying present during difficult times is gratitude. When life feels overwhelming, it’s easy to focus on the problems at hand and forget about the positive aspects of our lives. Cultivating gratitude, even in small ways, can shift your mindset and bring you back to the present moment.

Gratitude can be as simple as taking a moment to reflect on one or two things you’re thankful for. By focusing on what’s going well, you can balance out the stress of chaotic moments. This practice doesn’t negate the challenges you face, but it offers a healthier perspective on handling them.

Changing your perspective can also help you stay calm. For instance, instead of seeing interruptions as stress-inducing, try to view them as opportunities for growth. If your child is vying for attention during a busy moment, consider it a chance to practice patience and presence. By reframing situations, you can reduce frustration and maintain a sense of calm.

Practising Self-Compassion

Finally, practising self-compassion is essential for staying calm in challenging times. Self-compassion involves treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer a friend. When life gets chaotic, it’s easy to criticize ourselves for not handling things better. However, being hard on yourself only adds to the stress.

Instead, approach yourself with gentleness. Acknowledge that you’re doing your best under the circumstances. This attitude not only fosters calm but also helps you recover more quickly when things go wrong.

By being compassionate towards yourself, you create the emotional space to stay present and calm. Life’s challenges become less overwhelming when you approach them from a place of self-care rather than self-criticism.

A Calmer, More Present Life is Possible

Staying calm and present in the midst of life’s chaos is a skill that anyone can develop. By practising mindfulness, cultivating emotional intelligence, setting boundaries, using grounding techniques, and embracing gratitude and self-compassion, you can navigate life’s challenges with more ease. Though life’s stressors won’t disappear, your ability to handle them will improve, leading to a more centred and peaceful existence.

When you adopt a power pose—think of a superhero stance with your hands on your hips and your chest puffed out—your body sends signals to your brain that increase feelings of confidence and reduce stress. This concept is rooted in the mind-body connection, a fascinating area of psychology that explores how our physical state can influence our mental state.

The science behind this is quite interesting. When you strike a power pose, your body experiences a boost in testosterone, a hormone associated with dominance and confidence, and a reduction in cortisol, the stress hormone. This hormonal shift can make you feel more powerful and less anxious, which in turn can improve your performance in high-pressure situations. Even though some aspects of the original research have been debated, the general consensus is that body language does play a significant role in how we feel and how others perceive us.

The more you practice, the more natural it will feel, and over time, you may find that you carry yourself with more confidence in all areas of your life.

For instance, we might internalize the idea that failure is a reflection of our worth, something that can affect our social standing or how we are perceived by others. Yet, in truth, failure is simply part of the learning process.

Fear can dictate our lives in subtle ways. It can make us hesitate to take risks, stifle our creativity, or lead to missed opportunities. By trying to avoid failure, we might stick to the familiar and comfortable, choosing paths that seem safe but ultimately limit our growth.
