Being a Perfectionist May Be a Sign of Not Trusting Yourself

perfectionism

Are you a perfectionist? If so, your expectations may be set too high. It is an admirable trait to want everything to be perfect. The trouble is there is no time for it. You will also find that most people aren’t perfectionists. You are certain to be disappointed in them.

You need to learn how to manage expectations. It is a delicate balance, and you have to know when you have done as much as you should. You can always do more, but you need to move on.

Another problem with perfectionism is you may miss opportunities. Suppose you decide to hold off releasing a product because you want to put more features into it. You delay the release of the product by several months, only to find that your competitors are finished releasing their versions. The product you would have released was better than your competitors. Customers would have likely bought your products over your competitors. Try explaining that one to management or shareholders!

Further, if you miss those opportunities to get your product released, you will miss building relationships with your customers. Product releases have marketing activities associated with them, including sharing experiences on social media, etc. When customers have good experiences with products, they share those experiences with friends and family. Often, this sharing occurs on social media channels, which in turn, can go viral. It’s more challenging to build up a product that is not yet released than it is to build up one that is.

There are cases where perfectionism is warranted. Show business is one example. Medical techniques and technologies are another. In most other fields, perfectionism will hold you back. It’s not necessary, and it only leads to frustration and delays.

Of course, you should never release products that have a sloppy design or are dangerous to the consumer. That is where this delicate balance comes into play. The product needs to meet safety guidelines. Your reputation is at stake, and you don’t want customers bashing your product or your brand. In this case, it may be necessary to delay the release of products until they are safe, etc.

How does being a perfectionist a sign that you don’t trust yourself? You think that nothing is ever good enough and that you have to keep striving to be better. When you trust yourself, you can reel expectations to manageable levels.

Why You Must Attempt To Stay On Time Or Ahead of Schedule On Your Project

time-is-money

When you are faced with a large project with several tasks to complete, it is vital that you stay on time or ahead of schedule when completing each stage or task of the project. If you fall behind on any stage or task, it will make it more challenging to complete your project on time, and there can be some significant consequences that can result from trying to make up the time that was lost on earlier stages of the project.Stay-on-time

Falling behind on any stage or task of a project means that you will have to pick up the pace on later stages of the project in order to complete it on time. If you fail to complete the project on time, you will lose credibility and reputation with bosses, peers, customers, target markets, etc., depending upon your industry. Of course, this will also negatively impact your profitability as well. This is why you have to try to complete the project on time if at all possible.

Unfortunately, if you have to speed up your work on later stages of the project, chances are high that you will produce lower-quality work because you are rushing through it. Additionally, you will be less able to take breaks as recommended by most experts; this will keep you from resting your mind and keep it from being as focused as it can be. Most experts suggest taking 15-minute breaks every hour, but if you fall behind on your project, this will be much harder to do and still complete your project on time.

Therefore, there is a cumulative domino effect that occurs when you fall behind on a stage or task of your project that takes longer to be completed than expected, whether that’s due to procrastination, unexpected difficulties, etc. This is likely to negatively impact the rest of your work on the project because you have to move at a faster pace to make up for the time lost earlier. Additionally, you won’t be able to pace yourself and take needed breaks to keep your mind sharp throughout the rest of the project, likely leading to lower-quality work being produced as a result. You’ll likely be more irritable and less enthused about your work as a result as well. This is why it is critical that you stay on time or even ahead of schedule when working on all stages of a project so that you can avoid the negative consequences of falling behind.

To your success.

Why Working Non-Stop Doesn’t Lead To Your Best Work

non-stop-work

Many people get the idea that performing their best work on projects and tasks requires them to work non-stop on it, outside of possibly a quick bite to eat and maybe sleeping for a few hours. However, employing such a practice in completing your projects and tasks will likely lead to lower-quality work and damage your profitability, credibility, and reputation.

When you go with a “work at all costs” mentality to get your tasks and projects done, you suffer physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. If all you’re doing is working non-stop, you are taking time away from eating healthy, working out, spending time with family and friends, doing leisurely activities, and getting enough sleep. All of these missing factors will likely lead to a reduction in your work quality because you need to have a well-balanced life to continue producing work at a high level.

If you stop eating meals, you don’t get the proper nutrition you need to stay healthy and focused on your work. If you don’t exercise regularly, your health will suffer, both physically and mentally, leading to a decline in your work quality. If you stop spending time with family and friends, you’re likely to become bored with your work and lose focus because work is all that you’re doing. If you stop doing leisurely activities, you’ll become even more bored with your work, lose focus, and even become resentful of your work because it is all that you are doing. If you don’t get enough sleep, you won’t be able to focus enough on your work to make it of high-enough quality to where it stands out and gets you noticed by your employers, your peers, your customers, and/or your target markets.

Living a balanced life where work is part of it, not all of it, is key to producing your best-quality work. Being dedicated to your work and your business is a good thing; being obsessive about it to where you exclude and neglect everything is not. You will suffer damage physically, mentally, emotionally, and/or socially from neglecting other areas of your life to focus more on your work, and your work quality will suffer over time. In addition, you won’t be happy with working all of the time and doing nothing else, so much so that you may even resent your work. Therefore, having a healthy balance of work and other aspects of life is key to producing your best work on a consistent basis.

To your success.

Why Neglecting Yourself Doesn’t Lead To Your Best Work

best-work feature

best-workMost people who hear the term “hard worker” or “great worker,” they automatically think that they have to be an “all-out” worker who is always working, always making the sacrifice of other things in order to be working to get that recognition. Truth be told, hard workers or great workers are those that know how to balance work with other aspects of their life. Those that only think and do work and neglect other aspects of their lives will often product lower-quality work and be more likely to burn out because of their all-out dedication to work.

When you do nothing but work, other aspects of your life suffer. If you skip meals just to get more work in, you cut out key nutrients that can make you healthier, stronger, and more focused, including on your work. If you cut out many nutrients, you could make yourself more susceptible to disease, including colds, which can help to hamper your effectiveness and focus on completing your projects.

The same holds true when you cut out one or a few hours of sleep in order to get more work in; you feel run-down and are more susceptible to disease and illness. In addition, you aren’t as mentally focused on what you are doing, including on your work. This will usually lead to poorer-quality work.

If you neglect to spend time with your family and/or friends to put in more work, you will feel the impacts emotionally and socially. Chances are high you will be thinking about them as you are working, taking away your focus and increasing the chances you’ll do poorer-quality work as a result. In addition, they may become resentful because you are always choosing to work instead of spending time with them, which can cause you more stress and strain, which will further divert your focus and concentration when you need it most.

As you can see, ignoring other aspects of your life just to put more work in will NOT lead to you producing better-quality work; on the contrary, it will likely lead to poorer-quality work. You cannot ignore your own human needs – physical, mental, emotional, social – in an effort to produce more quality work; sooner or later, it will catch up with you and cause you to produce poorer-quality work. Achieving the right balance between work and other aspects of your life will enable you to produce the best-quality work you can on a consistent basis to where you will be known as a “hard worker” or “great worker.”

To your success.

Types of Distractions You Can’t Control

distractionIn virtually any line of work, you have distractions that you must overcome. An entrepreneur will especially have distractions that he/she will have to overcome. Some of these distractions are ones that you cannot control, but still must find a way to overcome them.

For instance, if you have a family, especially with children, you cannot directly control what they do with their time. Sure, as a parent, you can set ground rules on what they can or cannot do, but like anyone with free will, they can choose what they want to do, including not following the rules.

This means that they can make noise, such as playing loud music, and other distractions that can hinder your concentration and focus on your work. Additionally, there may be times when your spouse wants to run the vacuum cleaner or other equipment to clean the house; obviously, you have to take time to keep your house clean and tidy, and this often involves noise.

So, what as an entrepreneur who works from home can do? Well, you can talk to your family about how important a quiet environment is to your work and find a way for all to be satisfied with the arrangements you set up regarding work and noise. In addition, you can use earbuds or cotton balls to help cut out the noise that is made and that is unavoidable.

If you have pets, they may also make noise to where earbuds or cotton balls can help to cut out the noise as well. Additionally, it may be wise to keep them out of your work area if possible, then spend some time with them on your work breaks and when you are not working.

Other distractions that are out of your control include neighbors working in the yard (such as cutting their lawn, trimming hedges, etc.) and your landline phone ringing. In both cases, using earbuds or cotton balls can do much to reduce the noise and keep your concentration level high on your work. If you use an answering machine on your landline phone, you may wish to turn the volume down or even to mute so that you don’t hear any messages that are left on your answering machine.

Some distractions you can’t directly control, but you can find ways to overcome them. Whether it’s talking to your spouse and/or children about the importance of a quiet environment, keeping pets out of your work area, and using earbuds or cotton balls to help reduce or eliminate noise you can’t avoid, even distractions you can’t control can be overcome so you can keep your focus on your work and produce the highest-quality work in the shortest time possible.
