Breaking Bad Habits: Planning for Setbacks

Breaking bad habits can be a challenging and often frustrating process. It can be easy to fall off the wagon and revert to old habits. But it’s vital to remember that setbacks are a normal part of the process and can actually be an opportunity for growth and improvement.


Before you can start to plan your success goals, there are many things that you need to understand before you can be sure that the goals you set are really the ones you want.

One of those things is to determine if there are any Limiting Beliefs that can stop you from actually achieving those goals.

Here are several steps you can take to plan for setbacks and get back on track.

Forgive Yourself

It’s important to be kind to yourself when you experience a setback. Don’t beat yourself up or dwell on the mistake. Instead, recognize that it’s a normal part of the process and move on.

Take a Break

Sometimes a setback happens just because you’re overworking yourself. Often you can put things right by going for a walk, or working on something else and coming back to the issue with a clear mind. Planning for frequent breaks will help you minimize the number of setbacks you experience.

Evaluate What Happened

Take some time to reflect on what led to the setback. For example, did you have a particularly stressful day that made it harder to stick to your habits? Did you get caught up in a social situation that made it difficult to resist temptation? Understanding the root cause and triggers surrounding the setback will help you develop strategies to prevent it from happening again.

Set Specific and Achievable Goals

Clear goals keep you focused and motivated as you overcome setbacks. Be sure to set goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). You can learn about this at almost any university website, like this one in Minnesota.

Be Flexible and Adaptable

Setbacks are a normal part of life. It’s vitally important to be flexible and adaptable in the face of them. If something isn’t working, be willing to adjust your plan and try something new.

Find Healthy Coping Mechanisms

Stress majorly contributes to setbacks, so it’s imperative to find healthy ways to manage it. Choose healthy options that are proven to work, like exercise, meditation, or talking to a therapist.

Restart

Don’t let a setback discourage or derail your progress entirely. Instead, use it as an opportunity to start fresh. Set a new goal and make a plan to achieve it. Don’t worry about how long it will take – just focus on taking small steps in the right direction.

Seek Support

It is helpful to have someone to talk to when trying to break a bad habit. A friend or family member who is supportive and understanding can encourage and help you stay motivated. You can also consider joining a support group or working with a coach or therapist to help you overcome your challenges.

Stay Positive

Getting discouraged during a setback is common, but staying positive and focusing on your progress is important. Remember that change takes time, and it’s okay to have setbacks along the way.

Planning for setbacks is an important part of breaking bad habits. In our daily lives, how we think shapes our actions and decisions. Two common ways of thinking are the competitive mindset and the creative mindset. Both have their strengths and can be very useful, but they work in different ways. Let’s explore what each mindset is, how they differ, and when each can be most effective.


Confidence in your abilities to go after your goals can sometimes be difficult to find or keep.

It can sometimes take time to discover the confidence you have inside you. This can be especially true if you are trying something new.

Characteristics of a Competitive Mindset

1. Goal-Oriented: People with a competitive mindset set clear goals and work hard to achieve them. They are motivated by the desire to win and be recognized for their achievements.

2. Focus on Rivals: They constantly compare themselves to others. This helps them gauge their performance and strive to do better.

3. High Standards: They often set high standards for themselves. This can push them to work harder and improve their skills.

4. Resilience: Competitors are usually very resilient. They don’t give up easily and are willing to face challenges head-on.

Benefits of a Competitive Mindset

  • Motivation: The drive to win can be a powerful motivator. It pushes people to give their best effort.
  • Improvement: By constantly comparing themselves to others, individuals can identify areas where they need to improve.
  • Achievement: High standards often lead to significant achievements. Competitors are usually high achievers in their fields.


Drawbacks of a Competitive Mindset

  • Stress: The constant pressure to be the best can lead to high stress levels.
  • Burnout: Pushing too hard without breaks can lead to burnout.
  • Negative Relationships: Focusing too much on outdoing others can harm relationships and lead to a lack of collaboration.

Understanding the Creative Mindset

A creative mindset is about thinking outside the box and coming up with new ideas. People with this mindset value originality and innovation. This way of thinking is important in fields like art, science, and problem-solving where new solutions are needed.

Characteristics of a Creative Mindset

1. Curiosity: Creative thinkers are always curious. They love to explore new ideas and ask questions.

2. Open-Mindedness: They are open to new experiences and different perspectives. This helps them think of new and unique solutions.

3. Risk-Taking: Creativity often involves taking risks. Creative people are not afraid to try new things and make mistakes.

4. Flexibility: They are flexible in their thinking and can easily adapt to new situations.

Benefits of a Creative Mindset

  • Innovation: Creative thinking leads to innovation. This can result in new products, solutions, and ways of doing things.
  • Problem-Solving: Creative minds can come up with unique solutions to difficult problems.

Drawbacks of a Creative Mindset

  • Creative Mindset: Often collaborates with others. Values different perspectives and teamwork.

Risk Management

  • Competitive Mindset: Generally more risk-averse. Prefers to stick to proven methods to ensure success.
  • Creative Mindset: More willing to take risks. Open to experimenting with new and unproven ideas.

Measurement of Success

  • Competitive Mindset: Success is measured by external benchmarks like awards, grades, and comparisons with others.
  • Creative Mindset: Success is measured by personal satisfaction, originality, and the impact of their work.

When to Use Each Mindset

Understanding when to use each mindset can help individuals be more effective in different situations.

When to Use a Competitive Mindset

1. Achieving Specific Goals: When there are clear goals and rewards, a competitive mindset can be very effective.


2. Performance Improvement: If you need to improve your skills and performance, comparing yourself to others can help identify areas for growth.


3. High-Stakes Situations: In situations where there is a lot at stake, the drive to win can push you to perform your best.

When to Use a Creative Mindset

1. Solving Complex Problems: When faced with complex problems that need innovative solutions, a creative mindset is essential.


2. Innovation and Creation: In fields where new ideas are valuable, such as art, science, and technology, creativity is key.


3. Adapting to Change: In rapidly changing environments, being open-minded and flexible helps adapt to new circumstances.

Balancing the Two Mindsets

While it’s helpful to understand the differences between these mindsets, it’s also important to recognize that they are not mutually exclusive. In fact, the most successful people often balance both mindsets.

Combining Strengths

When you set meaningful goals, they become easier to achieve because you have something tangible to work towards that will help you break bad habits or create new good habits. In addition, with goal setting, small successes add up over time, leading to big results in your transformation.

Setting goals is an important part of personal and professional growth, but it’s important to set realistic goals that are achievable and sustainable. Unrealistic goals inevitably lead to disappointment and a lack of motivation, while realistic goals provide a sense of accomplishment and direction.

Knowing when a goal is realistic is all about setting sensible expectations for yourself. Start by defining the goal, breaking it into achievable steps, and assessing how much time and effort each step will take.

Here are several strategies for setting realistic goals – leading to success and fulfillment.

Know Your Values

Before you set any goals, it’s important to identify your values and priorities. What is most essential to you in your personal and professional life? Aligning your goals with your values ensures that your goals are meaningful and fulfilling.

Identify Any Roadblocks

When you set goals that are within reach, it’s more likely that you will succeed in achieving them. Always consider any external factors that may impact reaching your goal, such as finances or resources. Knowing this information will ensure that your goals are balanced and within reach.

Make Specific and Measurable Goals

Rather than setting vague goals like, “I want to be successful,” set specific and measurable goals that you can track your progress towards. For example, “I want to increase my income by 25% within the next year by finding a higher paying job or starting a side business.” Specific and measurable goals provide a clear direction and allow you to track your progress.

Make Sure Your Goals Are Attainable

It’s important to set goals that are challenging but also attainable. A goal that is too difficult or unrealistic is demotivating and leads to frustration. Consider your current resources and skills when setting goals, and make sure they are practical given your current circumstances.

Make Sure Your Goals Are Time Bound

Give yourself a timeline for achieving your goals. A timeline creates a sense of urgency and provides a deadline for reaching your goals. Having said that, make sure you give yourself enough time to achieve your goals rather than setting unrealistic deadlines that may lead to unnecessary stress.

Break Big Goals Down into Smaller Baby Steps

Large, long-term goals can seem daunting. To make your goals more manageable, break them down into smaller steps or tasks that you can work on consistently. This can help you progress towards your goals and feel accomplished.

Setting realistic goals is an important strategy for your personal and professional growth. To ensure your goals are realistic, identify your values and set specific and measurable goals that are attainable, with a sensible timeline that allows you to live a complete and mostly balanced life. And remember to be patient with yourself. Take time to celebrate your progress every step of the way. After all, that period when you’re doing the stuff to reach your goals is actually your life.

Which type of mindset do you have?

Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, in her insightful book *Mindset: The New Psychology of Success*, explains that there are two types of mindsets: a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. These mindsets shape how we view our abilities and personality.

A fixed mindset is the belief that our character, creative abilities, and intelligence are static traits that cannot change. People with this mindset think their basic abilities are inherent and will not improve beyond a certain point.

Individuals with a fixed mindset strive to appear intelligent because they do not believe their intelligence can grow. They fear looking unintelligent, thinking that once labelled as such, they will always be seen that way. Common fixed mindset thoughts include:

  1. Either I’m good at something, or I’m not.
  2. I can’t learn now; it’s too late.
  3. There’s no point in trying if I’m going to fail.
  4. I always struggle with…
  5. I’m a procrastinator.
  6. I’m not creative.
  7. It’s hard for me to lose weight.

In contrast, a growth mindset is the belief that abilities and intelligence can develop with time and experience. People with a growth mindset think they can become smarter, and that their efforts directly impact their success. They understand that persistence is key to learning.

Those with a growth mindset see their basic abilities as just the starting point for their potential. This mindset fosters a love of learning rather than a constant need for validation. Common growth mindset thoughts include:

  1. I can always become better at something through practice.
  2. I can learn whatever I want or need to, exactly when I need to learn it.
  3. I see failures as opportunities to learn, reassess, and improve.
  4. I can always do better if I put in the effort.
  5. Determination and effort determine my outcomes.
  6. I enjoy learning and growing and see it as a lifelong pursuit.

A key difference between these mindsets is how they handle challenges. A person with a fixed mindset will often avoid challenges out of fear of failure and may shirk responsibilities. Conversely, someone with a growth mindset embraces challenges, finding them engaging and valuable for learning. They overcome obstacles and move on to greater achievements.

Another important difference is in handling mistakes and feedback. A person with a fixed mindset is embarrassed by mistakes, often blaming others or becoming defensive when criticized. In contrast, someone with a growth mindset views mistakes as learning opportunities. They are open to criticism, seeing it as a way to improve and do better next time.

If you recognize a fixed mindset in yourself and want to change, you can. It requires practice, determination, awareness of your thoughts, and anticipating your reactions to situations. With effort, you can develop a more open, growth mindset that leads to success in all areas of life.

Creating Success for Yourself

Many people spend their lives wondering when success is going to magically appear on their lap but, of course, it never happens this way. If, instead, we spend less time dreaming and more time building, we’d be much happier and success will be well within our grasp.

Rather than waiting passively for success to whisk you away, it’s time to create your own version of success. When you are proactively taking steps every day, you have a better chance of realizing your goals. After all, it’s far more productive than watching other people achieve success.

A great way to create the successful life you have always hoped for is to set clear, actionable goals. How do you want your life to be defined? What do you want to be doing a year from now, five years from now, or even ten years from now? What sort of goals can you set for yourself that will help motivate you and keep you going in the right direction so you can reach out and grab what you want?

You will want to make sure the goals you set are attainable. The best way to do this is to start with short-term goals that help you work towards your long-term goals. This will help you move forward and build momentum without becoming discouraged. Besides, it’ll help to keep your eye on the prize. If you set goals that are too ambitious, you will be more inclined to give up before you even get started.

Building a “Success” Attitude

Your attitude and thoughts determine your success, so make sure they are congruent. If you have some negative or self-defeating inner dialogues, it will be much more difficult for you to achieve your goals and build the life of success you have always wanted. That’s why it’s a good idea to use the power of positive affirmations to propel you forward.

Affirmations can help people from all walks of life reach great success, even if they started out in the lowest of low places. So remember that success isn’t limited to the rich and famous.

Having a list of affirmations on hand can help you overcome those moments of self-doubt, envy, or even anger that you may feel toward others. Affirmations are simple thoughts like, “Each simple, completed task propels me towards success,” or, “I am worthy of great success.” These affirmations help to remind you of what your goals are and, in turn, remind you that you are worthy of all you desire, and more.
