Written Words Can Sharpen Your Spoken Voice

note taking

Have you ever left a meeting or conversation thinking, “I wish I’d said that differently”? It’s a common feeling, especially for people who find it challenging to express their thoughts on the spot. For those who prefer time to reflect, writing down what you want to say can be a game-changer. By organizing your ideas beforehand, you not only clarify your message but also build confidence in your ability to communicate effectively.

Confidence in your abilities to go after your goals can sometimes be difficult to find or keep.

It can sometimes take time to discover the confidence you have inside you. This can be especially true if you are trying something new.

I have a program that can help you to discover what is holding you back from achieving your goals as well as help you set an attainable goal related to where you are in your life and where you are trying to be.

This program also works with you to build up your confidence in being able to reach your goal.

Putting thoughts into words gives you a sense of control over what you want to convey. Writing allows you to explore and refine your ideas without the pressure of real-time reactions. For people who tend to freeze in the moment or struggle with nervousness, this approach transforms speaking into a manageable task rather than an overwhelming hurdle. A clear, written plan serves as a roadmap, guiding you toward a focused and impactful delivery.

One of the most significant advantages of writing down your thoughts is the opportunity to practice. Think of it as rehearsing for an important performance. Reading your words aloud helps you identify areas where your tone or phrasing might need adjustment. It also prepares you to handle interruptions or questions, as you’re already familiar with your key points. When it’s time to speak, the words feel natural because you’ve already practised them.

Writing can also help combat the fear of blanking out during a critical moment. Having a written outline or even a few key phrases on hand provides a safety net. Instead of worrying about forgetting your message, you can focus on delivering it with clarity and confidence. This sense of preparedness can be particularly helpful in high-stakes situations, such as job interviews, presentations or negotiations.

Actionable Step: Write and Review Your Key Points

Choose an upcoming situation where you know you’ll need to speak up. It could be a team meeting, a conversation with a mentor or even a casual discussion with friends. Take a few minutes to jot down the main ideas you want to express. Be concise but specific. If you’re preparing for a work meeting, structure your points around the topic being discussed. If it’s a personal conversation, focus on the emotions or outcomes you want to communicate.

Once you’ve written your thoughts, practice saying them out loud. Pay attention to your tone, pacing and emphasis. Adjust your phrasing if anything feels awkward or unclear. If possible, record yourself and listen to the playback. This process helps you refine your delivery and ensures that your message comes across as intended.

In addition to practising, bring your notes with you if the situation allows. While you don’t want to rely on them entirely, having a written reference can be reassuring. If you lose your train of thought, a quick glance at your notes can help you get back on track without missing a beat.

Writing down your thoughts also forces you to think critically about your message. Are your points relevant to the audience? Are they concise and easy to understand? By answering these questions during the writing process, you save time and prevent misunderstandings later. A well-prepared speaker is more likely to capture attention and inspire confidence.

Some people worry that relying on written preparation might make them sound rehearsed or inauthentic. However, the opposite is usually true. Preparation frees you to focus on connection rather than scrambling for the right words. It shows that you respect the time and attention of those you’re speaking to, which enhances your credibility and impact.

Over time, the habit of writing down your thoughts can improve your overall communication skills. The process trains you to think clearly and articulate your ideas with precision. Even in situations where you don’t have time to write, you’ll find that your practice has sharpened your ability to organize and express your thoughts quickly.

Every conversation or presentation is an opportunity to build trust and understanding. By taking the time to prepare through writing, you increase the likelihood that your voice will be heard and your message remembered. Whether you’re advocating for an idea, resolving a conflict or simply sharing your perspective, preparation turns potential hesitation into confident expression.

Small Steps Build Big Confidence in Speaking Up

confidence in speaking

Have you ever felt paralyzed by the thought of speaking up, even when you had something important to say? The fear of being judged or rejected can be overwhelming, especially if you’re not used to asserting yourself. The good news is that building the courage to speak up doesn’t require a giant leap. It starts with small, manageable steps that help you build confidence over time.

Before you can start to plan your success goals, there are many things that you need to understand before you can be sure that the goals you set are really the ones you want.

One of those things is to determine if there are any Limiting Beliefs that can stop you from actually achieving those goals.

I have a self-study Limiting Belief Program that you can go through to determine what your Limiting Beliefs are and how you can remove them.

You can read more and register for the program at Limiting Beliefs Program on my Confidence and Life Coaching website.

Start your journey on your path to success by identifying and removing your Limiting Beliefs so that you make the journey a lot easier.

When faced with the idea of expressing yourself, it’s natural to want to avoid the discomfort altogether. Many people fall into the trap of waiting for the “perfect moment” to start speaking up, only to realize that the moment never comes. By starting small, you remove much of the pressure and make the process of finding your voice more approachable.

Speaking up in one-on-one situations is one of the easiest ways to begin. Whether it’s sharing an idea with a trusted colleague, expressing your preferences to a friend or politely correcting a small mistake, these interactions provide a safe space to practice. They’re less intimidating than addressing a group and allow you to experiment with different ways of expressing yourself. Over time, these small victories add up, giving you the confidence to tackle more challenging scenarios.

Starting small also helps you build a positive feedback loop. The more you speak up, the more you realize that most people value your input. This realization encourages you to continue sharing your thoughts. You may even notice that people begin to seek out your opinions more frequently, reinforcing the idea that your voice has value.

Another advantage of starting small is that it helps you develop the skills necessary to handle larger, more complex situations. Just as a musician practices scales before performing a symphony, practising small interactions prepares you for the demands of public speaking or high-pressure discussions. With each step, you become more comfortable organizing your thoughts, maintaining eye contact and using a confident tone of voice.

Actionable Step: Start with One Low-Stakes Conversation

Identify one situation this week where you can practice speaking up. It could be something as simple as asking a question in class, sharing an idea during a team meeting or voicing your opinion about a movie choice with friends. Approach the conversation with the mindset that it’s okay to feel a little nervous. Focus on delivering one clear message, and remind yourself that this is a step toward a larger goal.

To make the process even smoother, plan what you want to say in advance. Write down a sentence or two summarizing your main point. If you’re worried about how the other person might respond, prepare a follow-up comment that shows you’re open to discussion. For instance, you might say, “I see your point, but I think this approach could also work because…” Practicing these phrases will help you feel more prepared and less likely to freeze in the moment.

While small steps are important, it’s equally crucial to be kind to yourself along the way. There will be times when you feel awkward or stumble over your words, and that’s okay. Growth rarely happens without a few missteps. Instead of focusing on what went wrong, celebrate the fact that you made an effort. Reflect on what you can improve next time, and keep moving forward.

As you build confidence, you’ll notice that speaking up becomes less about overcoming fear and more about sharing your authentic self. The more you practice, the less intimidating it feels to express your thoughts, even in situations where you might once have stayed silent. This shift in mindset opens up new opportunities for connection, collaboration and personal growth.

Starting small is about more than just easing into the habit of speaking up. It’s about proving to yourself that you have the courage and ability to be heard. Each time you take a step forward, you’re rewriting the narrative that kept you silent in the past. You’re building a new story — one where your voice matters and your contributions make a difference.

Know What You Stand For

values

Have you ever hesitated to share your thoughts, fearing you might offend someone or appear unprepared? Many people struggle with this, especially in situations that matter the most. But speaking up is not just about having courage; it’s about knowing what you stand for and why it matters. This foundation can be the difference between confident expression and lingering silence.

Understanding your values and priorities provides clarity and focus. Without this understanding, it’s easy to second-guess yourself or feel unsure of when to voice your opinions. For instance, imagine being in a meeting where a key decision is being made. If you haven’t identified what you believe in or what outcomes are important to you, it becomes much harder to articulate your perspective. Clarity about your principles serves as a compass, guiding you through moments of doubt.

Knowing what you stand for also helps you determine when speaking up is necessary and when it’s not. Not every situation requires your input, and that’s okay. The key is to recognize when your silence could mean compromising on something vital. For example, if you value honesty, staying quiet in the face of misinformation might feel like a betrayal of that principle. By aligning your words with your values, you not only feel more authentic but also gain the respect of those around you.

Actionable Step: Identify Your Core Values

Take a moment to write down the principles that matter most to you. These might include integrity, fairness, respect or ambition. Once you’ve identified these values, think about how they influence your daily decisions. Reflect on situations where you felt compelled to speak up and analyze what drove that urge. This exercise will make it easier for you to recognize moments when speaking up aligns with your beliefs.

Preparation is also a key element of confidently knowing what you stand for. When you anticipate situations where your values might be challenged — such as a debate, a performance review, or even a casual conversation — prepare your thoughts in advance. Ask yourself: What outcome do I hope for? What evidence or examples support my position? By planning, you’ll feel more confident in expressing yourself clearly and effectively.

This process isn’t just about protecting your interests; it’s about creating opportunities for growth and understanding. When you articulate what matters to you, you open the door to meaningful dialogue. Others may not always agree with you, but speaking up creates the possibility of finding common ground or gaining fresh perspectives. Your voice becomes a tool for connection, not just assertion.

At times, fear of confrontation or rejection may hold you back, even when you deeply believe in something. It’s important to recognize that these fears are often rooted in overestimating the negative outcomes of speaking up. In reality, most people value honest and thoughtful contributions, even if they differ from their own views. By focusing on your values, you can overcome these fears and build confidence in your ability to contribute meaningfully.

Believing in what you stand for also means being open to change. Your principles can evolve as you gain new experiences or insights. This doesn’t mean you’re indecisive; it means you’re adaptable. Staying true to yourself while remaining open to growth is a powerful combination that enhances your ability to communicate effectively.

When you take the time to understand your core values and how they shape your perspective, you equip yourself with the tools needed to speak up with confidence. You no longer feel the need to justify your thoughts excessively or fear being misunderstood. Instead, you trust that your voice, grounded in authenticity, has value.

By knowing what you stand for, you’re not just preparing to speak; you’re preparing to lead. Leadership doesn’t always mean having the loudest voice or the most authoritative presence. Sometimes, it’s as simple as standing firm in what you believe and expressing it with clarity and conviction. In doing so, you inspire others to do the same.

Turning Hobbies Into a Path to Passion

hobbies

Have you ever considered that your hobbies might hold the key to a more fulfilling life? Hobbies often start as casual pastimes — activities you enjoy during your free time — but they can reveal deep interests and skills that could lead to exciting opportunities. In today’s world, the line between hobby and career is blurrier than ever, and the passions you’ve been nurturing on the side might be more valuable than you think.

It’s easy to dismiss hobbies as “just for fun,” especially when life is filled with responsibilities and demands. But hobbies provide more than just relaxation. They offer insight into what truly excites and motivates you, free from the pressures of external expectations. Whether it’s crafting, gaming, gardening or photography, these activities showcase what you love doing simply for the joy of it.

In the past, turning hobbies into a career or significant pursuit might have seemed impractical. However, with today’s technology, it’s easier than ever to share your interests with a broader audience, build communities around them and even monetize them. Platforms like YouTube, Etsy, Instagram and Patreon allow hobbyists to showcase their talents, connect with others who share their passions and create opportunities to earn income while doing what they love.

Consider how many successful ventures began as hobbies. J.K. Rowling famously started writing “Harry Potter” as a side project while balancing her responsibilities as a single mother. What began as a deeply personal passion grew into a worldwide phenomenon. While not every hobby leads to global fame, many can evolve into rewarding paths that align with your passions and talents.

One of the most empowering aspects of hobbies is their authenticity. Unlike traditional jobs, which may come with expectations and constraints, hobbies are driven by personal interest. This freedom allows creativity to flourish, often leading to unexpected discoveries about yourself.

For those considering exploring hobbies more seriously, the first step is to identify the activities that consistently bring you joy. What are the things you look forward to during your downtime? What hobbies make you lose track of time? Once you’ve identified these, think about how they could fit into a larger picture.

Even if your goal isn’t to monetize your hobby, dedicating more time to it can enhance your well-being and bring balance to your life. Studies have shown that engaging in leisure activities reduces stress, improves mental health and boosts overall happiness.

Actionable Step:

Choose one hobby you’ve enjoyed but haven’t pursued recently. Dedicate an hour this week to revisiting it. Reflect on how it makes you feel and consider ways to integrate it more consistently into your routine, whether as a creative outlet or a potential side project.

For those interested in turning hobbies into income, start small. Experiment with sharing your work online, offering lessons or creating products related to your hobby. The goal isn’t immediate success but building confidence and learning how to merge passion with practicality.

It’s important to avoid the pressure of perfection. Hobbies are meant to be enjoyable, and turning them into a serious pursuit shouldn’t take away that sense of fun. Instead, focus on the journey — on learning, growing and connecting with others who share your interests.

Your hobbies are a reflection of who you are when you’re free to explore your interests without limitations. By investing more time and energy into them, you not only deepen your connection with yourself but also open doors to opportunities that might align with your true passions.

Don’t overlook the power of these seemingly simple activities. They might just lead you to a more meaningful and exciting chapter in your life.

Revisiting Dreams to Find Your True Passion

dream catcher

When you were younger, did you ever have a dream that felt so exciting and real, only to set it aside as life got in the way? Maybe it was becoming an artist, starting a business or travelling the world. These dreams might seem distant now, buried under responsibilities and practical concerns, but they hold valuable clues about your passions and what could bring you genuine fulfillment.

Dreams often represent our purest aspirations, unfiltered by societal expectations or fear of failure. Over time, however, we’re encouraged to prioritize practicality over passion. It’s common to hear advice like “follow your dreams” paired with warnings about stability and security. While these considerations are important, they can also create barriers that prevent you from revisiting those dreams and exploring what’s possible.

Reconnecting with your dreams doesn’t necessarily mean making a drastic life change. It’s about reflecting on the goals and passions that once excited you and considering how they could fit into your current life. Even dreams that seem impractical can be adjusted or reimagined in ways that align with your reality.

One of the best ways to reconnect with your dreams is to ask yourself what excited you before external pressures shaped your decisions. Did you love writing stories, playing an instrument or designing clothes? Think about why these activities resonated with you. Was it the creative process, the sense of accomplishment or the joy of sharing your work with others? By identifying the underlying elements of your dream, you can start to see how they might still have a place in your life today.

Take the example of someone who dreamed of being an actor but ended up working in corporate sales. While pursuing a Hollywood career might feel out of reach, they could still tap into their passion for performance by joining a local theatre group or starting a podcast. These outlets allow them to fulfill their creative desires while maintaining their responsibilities.

Fear is one of the most significant obstacles to revisiting old dreams. We fear failure, judgment and the possibility that our efforts might not lead to success. It’s important to remember that pursuing a dream doesn’t have to be about achieving perfection or external recognition. It’s about the joy and fulfillment you experience along the way.

Another common barrier is the assumption that dreams are permanent and unchanging. Just because you’re no longer interested in becoming a professional athlete doesn’t mean you can’t explore new passions related to sports, like coaching or writing about the game. Dreams evolve as we do, and allowing them to adapt to your current self can make them more attainable and meaningful.

Actionable Step:

Write down three dreams you’ve put on hold or abandoned. Next to each dream, list one small action you could take to explore it further. For example, if you always wanted to travel, research destinations within your budget. If you dreamed of writing a book, start with a single page or outline. Small steps help make big goals feel achievable.

The process of revisiting your dreams can also lead to a deeper understanding of what drives you. Maybe your childhood dream of becoming a doctor wasn’t about the title itself but the desire to help others. That insight could guide you toward volunteer work, mentoring or a career in social services.

Dreams aren’t just remnants of the past; they’re roadmaps to what lights you up. Even if your circumstances have changed, the core of what made those dreams special remains within you. By reconnecting with them, you gain a clearer sense of what brings you joy and a renewed sense of purpose.

Life doesn’t have to be an endless compromise between practicality and passion. There’s room for both if you’re willing to revisit the dreams you thought were lost. Who knows? That dream you once set aside might just be the key to creating a life that feels both meaningful and exciting.
