Break Out of Your Comfort Zone

  1. Examine Your Daily Routine:
Take a look at the types of day-to-day activities you are engaged with. See if there are ways to do them differently than you’ve been doing them. This can give you a renewed sense of value in those activities. You may also learn something in the process.

  2. Examine Your Career
What are you currently doing in your career? Is it something you still want to do or do you daydream about doing something completely different? If you are constantly thinking about how great your life would be if you were doing something different, it may be time to explore that. If so, be proactive and start learning as much as you can about the new path. Talk to people that are involved with it and even offer to volunteer to get some experience.

  3. Learn, Learn, Learn:
When people get too comfortable at anything, this is usually the time that something will happen to disrupt that comfort zone. Therefore, try never to stay comfortable. This will require you to stay on top of your game and continue to learn. Learning should never be looked at as something you stop after school is over. Too many people make this mistake and find their skills become obsolete over time.

  4. Anticipate & Accept Change:
The one thing that you can depend on in life is change. It will happen all throughout your life. Some changes will be great while others will be difficult to accept. People that you know will move away, and others will die. You will be faced with life decisions that overwhelm you. When you are more accepting of changes and try to account for them, you can prepare yourself better when they happen. You can never be truly prepared, but any preparation can lighten their severity.

  5. Try Not to Change Too Much Too Fast:
While it is good to accept change, if you try to take on too many changes, you will find it difficult to manage them. There will be situations where this can’t be helped. But, if you have control of several of the changes, take them slowly. Get used to small changes and then take on others once that happens. Allow yourself to get used to one change at a time.

  6. Help Others Manage Change:
Even though change is something you can depend on, this doesn’t make it easy for many people to handle. If you make yourself more willing to accept changes, you will be able to help others do the same. For instance, if your company is relocating to a new area, help those who may struggle with this. Try to get them to see the benefits of the change, rather than letting them focus solely on the negative aspects. Not everyone will be receptive, but if you help out even a few people, you have done something good. Be sensitive to the fact that everyone deals with change in their own way.

ACTIONABLE STEPS

Do something that would shock your friends. Maybe you swore in the past, that you would never go skydiving. So, go skydiving. Focus on doing something that is highly uncharacteristic of you.    Walk up to a total stranger and introduce yourself. Try to get a conversation going to the point where you both would like to meet again.  Start up a hobby that you have put off because you thought it was too hard to do. Often, the act of just getting started with something can show that what you are trying to accomplish is not as difficult as you first thought. You set up mental barriers that are broken once you begin.

Becoming a Peak Performer

When you are a peak performer, people take notice. They begin to look to you for inspiration. Your managers will also notice and will want to do whatever it takes to keep you happy. Learn what it takes to be a peak performer.

  1. Be a Lifelong Learner
It’s easy to go to work, do our jobs, come home and relax in front of the television. The trouble is, we become complacent and risk having skills become obsolete. When you become a lifelong learner, you keep your skills up-to-date, which lessens the chance of being let go. Dedicate one half hour every other evening to learn something new.

  2. Are You the Go-To Person in Your Company?
You may have noticed those people in your organization where everyone seems to hit up for advice. If this is not you, ask yourself why. These people are highly valued in an organization, and they get this way by taking on tasks outside of their job description. They constantly learn about the organization and become immersed in its success.

  3. Find Your Passion
If you are stuck doing something you hate, it’s going to be difficult to be a peak performer. Either try to restructure your function so that it is more to your liking or find something else that you have a passion for. When you are passionate about something, you will do anything to make sure you are doing your best.

  4. Read About Being Organized
When you are more organized, you will get more done. This will help you in your quest to become a peak performer. You will be able to plan better and take on other tasks that you would not have done if you didn’t organize yourself. Try to commit to reading a chapter a day about organization. You can also read profiles of successful people who describe how they became organized and how that led to their success.

  5. Exercise and Diet
If your body and brain are not functioning optimally, it’s going to be difficult to perform at your peak. You won’t sleep well at night which means that your concentration levels will suffer during the day. Eating a healthy diet is as important as getting exercise as the wrong types of food can drag you down. Besides, over the long run, you can start to experience serious medical conditions which will stress you out and keep you from doing your best.

  6. Maintain a Positive Attitude
If you are constantly negative, you will not be fun to be around. People will avoid you. It also sets the stage for you to knock down ideas without even considering them because your negativity tells you it can’t be done. You cannot achieve peak performance when this occurs. When you are positive, you will have an open mind about what may work and be willing to try different ways to see if they will work. People will flock to you as well, which means they will share their ideas. The more ideas, the better.

  7. Learn How to Be a Pitbull
A Pitbull latches onto something and doesn’t let go. When you do this with your tasks at work, you will make sure you get your work completed. Unlike a Pitbull, you do want to allow for some flexibility. You are working with other people, after all.

ACTIONABLE STEPS

Volunteer to teach a seminar on an unfamiliar topic. When you teach something, you will need to know the subject well. Teaching a seminar about something that you don’t know much about will require you to learn as much as you can. By committing to a date, you force yourself to learn in that amount of time. Be realistic about what you will be able to learn in that period.    Learn the goals of your organization. You may already know the goals of your department, but do you know what the overall goals of your company are? By learning what they are, you can align your skills and your knowledge towards the company.            Find the people who are crushing your field – pick one and learn as much about them as possible – what makes them tick, what motivates them and what habits they possess.

How to Find More Motivation in Your Life

Remember the last time you were motivated? You felt energized, and it was as though you could conquer the world. But, then a few days later, or even a few hours later, it was gone. Where did it go? Believe it or not, it is still there. You just have to learn how to tap into it. This will guide you on how to do that.

  1. Start Each Day with an Action
Make it a habit of doing some kind of action each and every day. It can be something from your goals and task list, or it can be something like an affirmation.  Just commit to doing one action. Of course, you are welcome to do more but always do one.

  2. Consider What Happens When You Don’t Motivate
What will the consequence be if you don’t take appropriate action or motivate? If you focus on that consequence, which is probably negative, you will be more likely to do what you need to get it done. It may be fear-based, but it can work in many instances.

  3. Get Over Your Fear of Failure
Allow yourself to fail. You should not fear it at all. It’s your greatest tool. People learn a lot when they fail. So use it to your advantage. Instead of treating it as a shortfall, welcome and embrace it.

  4. Get Over Your Fear of Success
Perhaps an even stronger problem is people’s fear of success. It’s a real fear, and it can hold you back even more so than fear of failure. One big reason for this is people are afraid to get out of their comfort zones. When you start to see some successes, it’s often easier at the beginning for people to sabotage that success. Don’t let this happen. Push through it.

  5. Shorten the Duration of Your Tasks
If you have tasks that have some time before due, consider shortening the amount of time you spend on them per session. In other words, if the task is due in two weeks, instead of working full time on it for three days, consider spending a half a day for one week or six days. You will still get things done before the deadline, but you won’t be rushing it or killing yourself trying to get it done sooner. By spacing out the time, you will have more motivation to complete it.

  6. Take Advantage of Bursts of Motivation
When you have a time during the day that you are getting a lot done due to an increase in motivation, use it to get even more done. Some people will use that motivation only for the task they are currently working on and then let that motivation die down. A better approach is to continue on other tasks while the motivation train is running, so to speak.

  7. Choose Your Optimal Time of Day
Some people get the most work done in the morning while others work best in the mid or late part of the day. Try to use these optimal times to get as much done as possible. Take on the bulk of your tasks then or take on the tasks that are more challenging during this optimal time.

ACTIONABLE STEPS

Write on a calendar (that will be visible while you work) actions you will complete for the next 30 days. It’s up to you if you want to choose the same tasks for each of the 30 days or if you want to make each day something different. Set aside one of those days to schedule the next 30 days following. If you do this enough, it will become a habit.Read profiles of famous people who you admire. Pay particular attention to the methods they used to motivate themselves. Sometimes, it may be subtle so try to pick up on that when reading about them. It may take reading a couple of times before capturing those subtle motivationsChoose one of the books below, set a deadline to finish it – and reach that goal!

Reach Your Goals With These 12 Strategies for Staying Motivated

You are dead in the water without motivation. Nothing get done and what is worse, you can’t even find the energy to change the situation. You really don’t want to fall into the vortex of broken dreams and lost promises. So how do you change that situation and condition? You just have to make sure that you don’t get there in the first place by using the trick of staying motivated.

Here are some methods to keep you feeling motivated.

1. Stop procrastinating. If you have stopped working there is a good chance that you are procrastinating and motivation is already slipping down to dangerous levels. You need to give yourself a sharp quick in the backside and keep going when this happens.

2. Cut out the distractions. Is there something going on around you that is taking away your attention? Until you get your momentum back, maybe it is time to start wearing headphones or isolate yourself from what is going on around you.

3. Change of scenery. You are growing stagnant and you are still having trouble staying motivated. You have been working too long and you need to clear your head. You should take a walk, go for a drive or, if you are stuck at work, take your laptop into an empty conference room, do anything to create a change.

4. Exercise. Your brain gets going again when you get some exercise since nothing stimulates the brain like exercise. It doesn’t take a long run to get your motivation back, even a short jog around the block will get your heart pumping and you brain will start to produce endorphins to put you back into high gear again.

5. Meditate. In contrast to item 4, slow down, close your eyes and breathe deeply. Relax and let go of what is going on around you and find your centre and your calm.

6. Stop worrying. This is a lot easier said than done. What you need to do here is to let go of the things that you cannot change so that you can keep looking forward without being inhibited by anything.

7. Listen to music. The genre doesn’t matter it is how the music makes you feel that counts. Use whatever gets you up and back into motion, that puts a bounce in your step and ideas into your head.

8. Make a daily to-do list. If you are overwhelmed by big goals you might be losing your motivation. You need to break down those goals and put the bite-sized pieces on a daily To-Do list. Just be careful not to overload the list with too much. You want to set yourself up for success, not failure.

9. Find someone who motivates you. Do you need a mentor? Could reading a biography of someone who motivates you be just the thing you need to inspire you back into action? You need to give yourself time to talk with your mentor or read a book on a regular basis.

10. Visualize success. The most important method of motivation is to see yourself completing the project in as much detail as possible. You tell your subconscious that you can succeed by having positive visualizations of success. Sometimes that is all that you need to get your energy level back up.

Obviously, there are many more things that are not on this list that you can try. We are all different and if something motivates you, then use that method to keep your project on track. You are the only one that knows what you need to succeed, so get out and do it.
