Mastering Procrastination: A Pathway to Success

procrastination

Success is often perceived as the result of extraordinary ideas or seemingly impossible feats. However, it is predominantly the outcome of consistently executing mundane tasks. Success is achieved by doing the things that many are unwilling to do. Whether the goal is weight loss, career advancement, academic excellence, or financial prosperity, the journey is frequently unenjoyable.

In most situations, the necessary actions are evident. The true challenge lies in motivating oneself to undertake these actions.

Confidence in your abilities to go after your goals can sometimes be difficult to find or keep.

It can sometimes take time to discover the confidence you have inside you. This can be especially true if you are trying something new.

I have a program that can help you to discover what is holding you back from achieving your goals as well as help you set an attainable goal related to where you are in your life and where you are trying to be.

This program also works with you to build up your confidence in being able to reach your goal.

You can find out more about this program at Confidology, a funny name but a serious program.

Effectively managing procrastination involves compelling oneself to perform tasks that are undesirable. This practice is invaluable for cultivating success. Overcoming procrastination equips you with the ability to achieve virtually any goal.

Understanding the Procrastination Process

  1. Initial Thought: The process begins with the contemplation of a task. This is the starting point of any activity.
  2. Emotional Response: Each thought elicits an emotional response. Positive emotions facilitate task initiation, whereas negative emotions hinder it. For instance, it is easy to get off the couch for a snack but challenging to do so for a less enjoyable task like painting the gutters.
  3. Avoidance: If the task evokes negative emotions, it is avoided. Each individual has consistent procrastination habits. Identifying these habits can be insightful. Make a list of activities you engage in to avoid tasks.
  4. Action Trigger: Eventually, the discomfort of procrastination outweighs the discomfort of the task itself, prompting action. Tasks such as paying taxes, taking out the trash, applying for jobs, or completing assignments are eventually addressed.

This procrastination cycle is common but counterproductive for those striving to advance or maintain order in their lives.

An Alternative Approach to Unpleasant Tasks

  1. Reframe Your Perspective: When a task feels daunting, view it as an opportunity to develop success skills. This mindset differentiates the highly successful from the habitual procrastinators. Successful individuals tackle challenging tasks head-on.
  2. Acknowledge Your Feelings: Take a moment to sit with your emotions. Close your eyes and breathe slowly. Identify where you feel discomfort in your body-whether it is in your head, chest, or stomach. Focus on relaxing that area and releasing tension.
  3. Commit to Five Minutes: Dedicate just five minutes to the task you wish to avoid. Starting is often the most difficult part, so become proficient at initiating tasks. Frequently, you will find yourself continuing beyond the initial five minutes. Acknowledge your effort and persistence.
  4. Practice Self-Forgiveness: Accept that some days will be more productive than others. Developing the skill to overcome discomfort and procrastination is challenging. When setbacks occur, forgive yourself and resolve to keep trying.

Procrastination is an intrinsic human behaviour, likely beneficial in our evolutionary past when poor decisions could be catastrophic. Our brains required substantial convincing before taking action.

In contemporary times, delaying unpleasant tasks may seem logical, but it is counterproductive.

Decide that the present moment is the right time to act. Utilize your procrastination tendencies as a catalyst for learning and achieving success.

Which type of mindset do you have?

mindset

Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, in her insightful book *Mindset: The New Psychology of Success*, explains that there are two types of mindsets: a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. These mindsets shape how we view our abilities and personality.

A fixed mindset is the belief that our character, creative abilities, and intelligence are static traits that cannot change. People with this mindset think their basic abilities are inherent and will not improve beyond a certain point.

Before you can start to plan your success goals, there are many things that you need to understand before you can be sure that the goals you set are really the ones you want.

One of those things is to determine if there are any Limiting Beliefs that can stop you from actually achieving those goals.

I have a self-study Limiting Belief Program that you can go through to determine what your Limiting Beliefs are and how you can remove them.

You can read more and register for the program at Limiting Beliefs Program on my Confidence and Life Coaching website.

Start your journey on your path to success by identifying and removing your Limiting Beliefs so that you make the journey a lot easier.

Individuals with a fixed mindset strive to appear intelligent because they do not believe their intelligence can grow. They fear looking unintelligent, thinking that once labelled as such, they will always be seen that way. Common fixed mindset thoughts include:

  1. Either I’m good at something, or I’m not.
  2. I can’t learn now; it’s too late.
  3. There’s no point in trying if I’m going to fail.
  4. I always struggle with…
  5. I’m a procrastinator.
  6. I’m not creative.
  7. It’s hard for me to lose weight.

In contrast, a growth mindset is the belief that abilities and intelligence can develop with time and experience. People with a growth mindset think they can become smarter, and that their efforts directly impact their success. They understand that persistence is key to learning.

Those with a growth mindset see their basic abilities as just the starting point for their potential. This mindset fosters a love of learning rather than a constant need for validation. Common growth mindset thoughts include:

  1. I can always become better at something through practice.
  2. I can learn whatever I want or need to, exactly when I need to learn it.
  3. I see failures as opportunities to learn, reassess, and improve.
  4. I can always do better if I put in the effort.
  5. Determination and effort determine my outcomes.
  6. I enjoy learning and growing and see it as a lifelong pursuit.

A key difference between these mindsets is how they handle challenges. A person with a fixed mindset will often avoid challenges out of fear of failure and may shirk responsibilities. Conversely, someone with a growth mindset embraces challenges, finding them engaging and valuable for learning. They overcome obstacles and move on to greater achievements.

Another important difference is in handling mistakes and feedback. A person with a fixed mindset is embarrassed by mistakes, often blaming others or becoming defensive when criticized. In contrast, someone with a growth mindset views mistakes as learning opportunities. They are open to criticism, seeing it as a way to improve and do better next time.

If you recognize a fixed mindset in yourself and want to change, you can. It requires practice, determination, awareness of your thoughts, and anticipating your reactions to situations. With effort, you can develop a more open, growth mindset that leads to success in all areas of life.

Success Is Not Luck, It’s You!

unsuccessful

Do you worry that your co-workers or friends might think you’re a fraud? Do you often feel like you don’t belong? These feelings are signs of impostor syndrome, and about 70% of successful people experience them at some point in their lives.

Impostor syndrome can make you feel that your achievements are due to luck rather than your abilities. You might think you aren’t as capable as others believe you are and fear being exposed as a fraud.

Research shows that both men and women struggle with impostor syndrome and often fail to recognize and accept their own successes.

Five Patterns of Impostor Syndrome

According to impostor syndrome expert Valerie Young, author of *The Secret Thoughts of Successful Women*, there are five common patterns among those who experience this phenomenon:

  1. You set unrealistic goals for yourself and are often seen as a perfectionist.
  2. You hesitate to speak up or answer questions because you fear not knowing the answer.
  3. You avoid asking for help, worried that others will see you as a failure.
  4. You feel like a fraud if an answer doesn’t come naturally to you.
  5. You push yourself harder than your peers to prove your worth.

People with impostor syndrome believe their successes are due to luck rather than their own hard work or abilities. This mindset can trap them in a cycle of negative thinking, holding them back from advancing in their careers. They might work excessively hard, leading to burnout and increased feelings of failure.

Change Your Mindset, Change Your Life

If you experience impostor syndrome, you might have trouble accepting your own success. You might feel undeserving of your position or accomplishments. Here are some ways to combat these feelings:

  1. Adjust Your Mindset: Accept your imperfections instead of striving for perfection in every project or goal.
  2. Embrace Imperfections: Learn to accept yourself as you are and remind yourself that you did your best.
  3. Set Realistic Goals: Review your goals honestly and keep them achievable.
  4. Value Your Effort: Appreciate the effort you’ve put in, regardless of the outcome. Even if you fall short, be proud of your hard work.
  5. Focus Your Goals: Concentrate on specific goals rather than dividing your attention. Allow others to handle parts of a task so you can focus on what you enjoy.

Impostor syndrome can make even the strongest and most successful individuals feel inadequate. It affects all areas of life, so it’s important to evaluate where you are and find ways to move forward positively.

Luck and Success

Ability is of little account without opportunity.” – Napoléon Bonaparte

Does luck create success or does success create luck? The article below talks about 3 ways to increase our luck to be more successful in life and business.

How to Increase the Luck Factor in Your Success by T. J. Philpott

failure is success if we learnHow big is the luck factor when it comes to the amount of success you experience in your life? Many of us attribute any success in business or in other aspects of our lives to some ‘mythical’ luck factor. When you think about that what we are really doing is de-emphasizing our own involvement in any personal achievements we may have accomplished. I do not know about you, but I for one do not want to think I have little control over my own fate. I believe that each one of us is capable of achieving great success in our lives if only we apply ourselves. In fact this luck that we often attribute success to is something we can develop for use in our own personal pursuits.

Here are 3 ways in which we can increase our own luck factor to help us achieve any personal or professional goals we may have.

Concentration

Achieving success in business or otherwise starts with first identifying what it is you want. By determining your goals you are now better able to prepare yourself to pursue them. Preparation is half the battle and although it may seem like just dumb luck when you see people succeed what you did not witness was the preparation involved.

With a greater focus on what it is you are striving for also comes the ability to recognize any opportunities that can help you achieve these goals when you see them.

Repetition

As the saying goes ‘practice makes perfect’ and this is so true in every aspect of our lives. Outstanding athletes get that way through many long hours of practice as do successful business people. In order to excel at anything it is almost always necessary to commit yourself fully towards learning and mastering any and all of the skills involved.

Persistence

The only thing true about becoming an ‘overnight success’ is that it takes commitment and perseverance over a period of time to achieve! There will be setbacks of that you can be sure but it is your willingness to work through the difficult and frustrating times that will ultimately set you on the path to great success.

Do not ever give up if you believe in what you are doing!

When we reference the luck factor that is involved in the success of ourselves or others it is important to understand this good fortune is something we can create. This realization helps people become aware how much control they have over their own fate. Whether it is success in business or in some other aspect of our lives we play the starring role in the creation of the luck involved in any personal achievements. You see luck is not something that happens just by chance but instead it is a coordination of circumstances which we can create and bring together. The 3 ways we spoke of above are efforts we ourselves can consciously put forth in order to create the luck we need to achieve the great success we seek.
